Cardinal Rouco Varela will celebrate his golden episcopal jubilee at the Almudena Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid will host a solemn Mass of thanksgiving next Saturday, October 31, at 12:00 p.m., marking the 50th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela. The Archbishop Emeritus of Madrid, who has just turned 90, will thus commemorate half a century of episcopal ministry, during which he led the archdioceses of Santiago de Compostela and Madrid.

According to Religión Confidencial, the Archdiocese of Madrid has planned this celebration to honor the prelate’s career, during which he governed the Madrid see for twenty years. Priests and faithful are invited to the Eucharist, and representatives from the dioceses of Santiago de Compostela and Mondoñedo-Ferrol—especially linked to his personal and pastoral journey—are also expected to attend.

Although not all details of the celebration have been released yet, the presence of the current Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal José Cobo, along with other members of the episcopate, is anticipated.

Half a century since his consecration in Santiago de Compostela

Antonio María Rouco Varela was born in Villalba (Lugo) in August 1936. After completing ecclesiastical studies in Mondoñedo and Salamanca, he was ordained a priest in 1959 and later earned a doctorate in Canon Law from the University of Munich. His academic career led him to serve as a professor and vice-rector at the Pontifical University of Salamanca.

On September 17, 1976, Paul VI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Santiago de Compostela, and on October 31 of the same year he received his episcopal consecration in the Compostela cathedral.

Eight years later, in 1984, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, where he remained until 1994. During that period, he played a prominent role in organizing the 1989 World Youth Day, which brought together hundreds of thousands of young people around the Polish Pope.

In 1994 he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Madrid, succeeding Cardinal Ángel Suquía, just as he had previously done in Santiago. John Paul II created him a cardinal in the consistory of February 21, 1998.

Twenty years leading the Archdiocese of Madrid

Cardinal Rouco Varela served as Archbishop of Madrid from 1994 to 2014, a period marked by his presence in Spanish public debate and his defense of the Church’s positions on issues such as family, marriage, education, and the protection of human life.

During his pastoral leadership, Madrid hosted the 2011 World Youth Day, presided over by Benedict XVI—one of the most significant ecclesial events held in Spain in recent decades.

Rouco also presided over the Spanish Episcopal Conference in two terms, from 1999 to 2005 and again from 2008 to 2014.

On August 28, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the governance of the Madrid archdiocese due to age. He remained as apostolic administrator until the installation of his successor, Carlos Osoro, on October 25 of that year.

The celebration on October 31 will serve to recall the fifty years since his episcopal consecration and to gather in the Madrid cathedral the faithful and priests of the particular Churches where he carried out his ministry.
