He now positions himself as a propagandist and supporter of Opus Dei.
This makes it reasonable to think that someone with power has called his attention. It is even possible that he himself has realized how untenable the role he had insisted on playing was, showing himself incapable of pastoral ministry. Nor will there be a lack of those who think that neither so much for the present, nor so little for the past—so disproportionate and prolonged.
He will undoubtedly have verified—his deteriorated mind is capable of perceiving that evidence—that he has been left alone once his great and most important patron has passed away, following his Jesuit fixation against Opus Dei. His statements, which attest to that contradiction and which we are now learning, presumably through the bishop’s indiscretion, are truly unfortunate.
He has no unconditional supporters, except perhaps some sycophant. And the enemies of Opus Dei, of whom there are some, who should have regarded him as the spokesperson and standard-bearer of their disagreements, will today have come to consider him a traitor to everything the bishop of Barbastro represented in his opposition to Opus.
There seems to be no other way out than to grant him the resignation, even if he has not submitted it.
