The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is already preparing for one of the most important events of recent years. Just over two months before the arrival of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for September 27, the organization has launched a comprehensive logistical and security operation that will involve an investment of over two million euros to welcome the thousands of pilgrims expected to take part in the day.
The visit to Lourdes will be part of the apostolic journey that the Pontiff will make to France between September 25 and 28, with stops in Paris, Lourdes, and Metz, as confirmed by the Holy See. For the Marian sanctuary, one of the main international centers of pilgrimage, the Pope’s presence constitutes an exceptional event that has already mobilized its leaders and local authorities.
A day marked by prayer and pilgrimage
The Sanctuary has explained that Leo XIV will arrive in Lourdes as “just another pilgrim.” During his stay, he will visit the Grotto of Massabielle, the spiritual heart of the site where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.
The central moment of the visit will be the open-air Mass that the Pope will celebrate in the afternoon on the sanctuary’s great meadow, which all the faithful who wish to attend may join. At nightfall, the Pontiff will take part in the traditional Marian torchlight procession, one of Lourdes’ most iconic images and one of the most widely attended events held daily at the sanctuary.
In the words of the Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes, Jean-Marc Micas, the visit represents, above all, the arrival of the “successor of Peter,” who comes to “confirm his brothers in the faith and to address our entire society.”
An unprecedented deployment
The magnitude of the visit has required the design of a large-scale organizational operation. The sanctuary’s leaders will allocate more than two million euros to cover technical installations, sound systems, giant screens, security measures, the reception of pilgrims and volunteers, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate media outlets from various countries.
The operation will include more than ten kilometers of security fencing, the participation of more than 600 volunteers, an international center prepared to receive nearly one thousand journalists, a platform with capacity for 400 bishops and cardinals, and space for the participation of around 3,000 priests in the liturgical celebrations. In addition, nearly 1,000 temporary restrooms will be provided, along with reinforced cleaning and waste-management services.
With these preparations, Lourdes is facing one of the largest organizational operations in its recent history. Everything is being arranged so that Leo XIV’s pilgrimage proceeds smoothly and welcomes, under the best conditions, the thousands of faithful who will come to the sanctuary to accompany the Pope on what is expected to be a historic day.
