Amid the prolonged humanitarian crisis that continues to impact Gaza and as the small Christian community struggles to maintain its presence in the Strip, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Patriarch Theophilos III of the Orthodox Church carried out a joint pastoral visit this Monday to accompany the faithful and express the closeness of the Churches of Jerusalem to those suffering the consequences of the war.
According to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, both religious leaders were accompanied by Dr. Josef D. Blotz, Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, as well as representatives of Malteser International, one of the main Catholic humanitarian aid organizations present in the Holy Land.
A visit to bring comfort and hope
The Patriarchate explained that the visit responds to the pastoral responsibility that the Churches of Jerusalem maintain both with the Christian communities of Gaza and with the entire population affected by the conflict.
The presence of Pizzaballa and Theophilos III seeks to convey a message of spiritual closeness in a context marked by fear, human losses, uncertainty, and the deterioration of living conditions.
Through personal encounters, moments of prayer, and visits to local communities, both patriarchs aim to bring the faithful the support of the entire Church of Jerusalem and remind them that they have not been forgotten.
The Christians of Gaza, a small but persevering community
Although they constitute a very small minority, the Christians of Gaza represent one of the oldest communities in the Middle East. Amid the difficulties arising from the war, parishes and church centers have become a refuge for numerous families seeking protection and material assistance.
In recent months, the Church has maintained an intense work of assistance through its parishes, schools, and charitable works, providing food, medicine, and support to those who have lost their homes or have been caught in the violence.
The survival of this community is of particular concern to the Churches of the Holy Land, which view with unease the progressive weakening of the Christian presence in a region where Christianity has its roots in apostolic times.
Meetings with priests, religious, and families
During their stay in Gaza, Cardinal Pizzaballa and Patriarch Theophilos III will hold meetings with priests, religious brothers and sisters, and Christian families affected by the current situation.
The main objective of the visit is to spiritually strengthen a community under extraordinary pressure and to demonstrate the unity of the Christians of the Holy Land in the face of the suffering of the population.
The joint visit also constitutes a significant gesture of collaboration between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches of Jerusalem, which in recent years have intensified their cooperation in defense of the Christians of the region and the most vulnerable communities.
