The crisis of the religious 2025, V (Annuario Pontificio 2026)

Menesians (Brothers of Christian Instruction): In 1973 there were 1,773; forty years later barely 863 remained, twelve fewer than the previous year. They have lost 52% of their religious along the way. At the very least. They were surely more numerous before 1973. And what I say of the Menesians applies to all those for whom I took 1973 as the reference year. They continue their descent into the abyss. On 1 January 2014 there were already 841, twenty-two fewer than the previous year. They are now at a 54% loss. On 1 January 2015 they had fallen to 828, thirteen fewer than the previous year. Although their decline remains at 54%

The year that has passed continues to point the way to their disappearance. On 1 January 2016 only 804 remained. Twenty-four brothers had left. The loss is now 55%

On 1 January 2018 there were 773, eight fewer than on the same date the previous year. They lose 57%

On 1 January 2019 there were 755, eighteen fewer than a year earlier. The decrease rises to 58%

On 1 January 2020 they had lost six brothers: 749. The decrease is now 59%

On 1 January 2021 five more brothers disappear: 744. They remain at 59%

On 1 January 2023 twenty-three brothers have disappeared; 721 remain. The loss is now 60%

On 1 January 2024 there were sixteen fewer: 705. 61%.

On 1 January 2025 twenty-two more religious disappear: 683. The institute’s decrease rises to 62%

La Salle (Brothers of the Christian Schools): These religious are faring even worse. In 1973 there were 14,517. By 2013 only 4,604 remained, and 133 fewer than the previous year. This is free fall without a parachute. They lost 69% of the congregation. On 1 January 2014 they continued in free fall. There were only 4,466, 138 fewer than the previous year. The decrease now reaches 70%. The catastrophe continues. On 1 January 2015 they had already fallen to 4,322 losing 144 brothers in a single year. The decrease now stands at 71% and is certainly higher, since in 1973 there were already fewer than the peak number.

On 1 January 2016 only 4,075 remained; 257 brothers had disappeared in a year. Today, writing in 2017, it is already certain they have lost the 4,000 mark. On an accelerated path to disappearance. They are now at a 72% loss.

One hundred and forty were lost in 2017, for on 1 January 2018 3,775 remained. The decrease continues at 74%

The collapse intensifies: in 2018 they lost 179 more religious. On 1 January 2019 3,596 remained. They have already lost 76% of the institute

On 1 January 2020 110 brothers have disappeared: 3,486. They remain at 76%

On 1 January 2021 only 3,329 remain; no fewer than 157 brothers were lost. The decrease reaches at least 78% of the institute.

On 1 January 2022 126 more brothers were lost: 3,203. 79%

On 1 January 2023 another 125 disappeared; 3,078 remain. They continue at 79% loss.
On 1 January 2024 there are 148 fewer: 2,930. The decrease is now 80%
On 1 January 2025 78 have disappeared; 2,852 remain. The decrease rises to 81%

Brothers of the Sacred Heart: Also on the path to extinguishing the light. In 1973 there were 2,373. After forty years 1,121 remain—the same number as the previous year. They have lost at least 53% of the institute. These brothers are not faring well either.

On 1 January 2014 they had fallen to 1,107, a decrease of 14 from the previous year. The loss is now 54%. On 1 January 2015 there were 1,026, eighty-one fewer than the previous year. The loss of members is now 57%.

On 1 January 2016 they had already lost the 1,000 mark. Only 997 remained. The loss is now 58%

No improvement is visible—quite the contrary. On 1 January 2017 there were 965, thirty-two fewer than a year earlier. They have already lost 60% of those who existed in 1973.

On 1 January 2018 they continue to decline. 925 brothers remained, forty fewer than a year earlier. The decrease rises to 61%

Mysteriously, 2018 was a wonderful year in which they gained twenty-one brothers: 946. They remain at 61%

It was a vain illusion; on 1 January 2020 thirty brothers were lost. 916 remain. The decrease is 62%

On 1 January 2021 thirty-eight brothers have disappeared; 878 remain. The decrease is at least 64% compared with 1973

On 1 January 2022 twenty-three were left behind: 855. They remain at 64%

On 1 January 2023 there are seven fewer than a year earlier: 848. The loss is 65%

On 1 January 2024 there were thirty-seven fewer than a year earlier: 811. They have already lost 66%

On 1 January 2025 fifty-four have disappeared: 794, seventeen fewer than the previous year. The decrease rises to 67%

Sons of the Holy Family: The members of the congregation founded by the Catalan Fr Manyanet numbered 173 in 1973. Forty years later they had only fallen to 166, and were six more than in 2012. An excellent result. They continue to decline, for now moderately. On 1 January 2014 there were 161, five fewer than the previous year. The percentage of losses remains excellent for what we are seeing: 7%. I fear it will increase in successive years. On 1 January 2015 only 148 remained, thirteen fewer than a year earlier. In congregations with so few members any rise or fall significantly affects the percentage. The decrease has risen to 15%

On 1 January 2016 only 141 remained, seven fewer than the previous year. In congregations with so few members such decreases, even if small, are very worrying. They are now at a 19% loss.

On 1 January 2017 the collapse accelerates. Only 122 remain, nineteen fewer than a year earlier. The decrease is now 30% and far more serious given their tiny number.

The descent does not stop; on 1 January 2018 there were four fewer than a year earlier: 118. They lose 32%

And two fewer at the start of 2019: 116. Decrease of 33%

On 1 January 2020 there are four fewer: 112. The loss is 36%

On 1 January 2021 they increase by five religious: 117. Will it be true? 33%

On 1 January 2022 they increase again, this time by only one: 118. 32%

On 1 January 2023 they increase by one religious: 119. They remain at 32%

On 1 January 2024 there is an increase of five religious, reaching 124. 29%

On 1 January 2025 losses return and seven religious are lost: 117. They return to 33%

Pavonians: In 1967 there were 283. On 1 January 2013 there were only 197, five fewer than the previous year. They lost 31%. The percentage would be quite acceptable, but the number puts them in a critical situation. And they continue to decline. On 1 January 2014 there were 194, three fewer than the previous year. They are now at a 32% decrease. On 1 January 2015 there were 192, two fewer than the previous year. The percentage of decrease is now 33%

They continue in free fall. On 1 January 2016 only 180 remained, twelve fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now 37%.

On 1 January 2017 the same number remained, though a year older. They continue at a 37% decrease.

On 1 January 2018 there were 173, seven fewer than the previous year. The decrease rises two points: 39%

On 1 January 2019, 172, only one fewer than a year earlier, but the loss rises to 40%

On 1 January 2020 there are 174, two more than a year earlier. The loss falls to 39%

2020 was a bad year and eleven religious disappeared: 163. The decrease rises to 43%

On 1 January 2022 they remain at 163 and 43%

On 1 January 2023 there are six more: 169. 41%

On 1 January 2024 they increase by nine religious and reach 178, reducing the loss by three points: 38%. Do we believe this?

On 1 January 2025 they continue to tell us they are increasing, by no fewer than seven more religious, reaching 185. Despite their insignificance, the decrease falls to 35%

Legionaries of Christ: They experienced spectacular growth, from 303 in 1966 to 2,273 in 2009. The public revelation of their founder’s scandalous life and the pontifical intervention in the congregation caused vocations to drop and a significant number of departures. In 2013 1,888 still remained, a decrease of 105 from 2012. With the congregation’s government recovered and new statutes, the future lies in their hands. They will probably experience a few more years of decline and then it will depend on them.

The tremendous crisis suffered is not very noticeable in the latest data, for on 1 January 2014 there were still 1,818, a loss of seventy from the previous year.

On 1 January 2015 there were 1,729, eighty-nine fewer than in the previous year. These departures respond much more to exits than to deaths, with many of them joining the secular clergy.

The effects of the grave situation endured are still noticeable, but I think they are tending to lessen. On 1 January 2016 there were 1,650, seventy-nine fewer than the previous year. In this case new vocations, which they have, do not so much offset deaths as exits.

On 1 January 2017 they fell to 1,582, sixty-eight fewer than a year earlier. New vocations still do not cover exits, more than deaths which are still very scarce in such a new congregation, but I think they are overcoming the tremendous crisis endured. The decrease in recent years—105, 70, 89, 79, 68—seems to be moderating.

And it is moderating; on 1 January 2018 they had lost only five members compared with the previous year: 1,577

2018 was worse, with another seventy-seven religious disappearing. 1,500 remain. The loss relative to their maximum year is 35%

On 1 January 2020 there were 1,455, forty-five fewer than the previous year. The decrease: 36%

On 1 January 2021 there were 1,432, only twenty-three fewer than a year earlier. 37%

On 1 January 2022 losses increase again: forty-seven religious, 1,385. 38%

On 1 January 2023 they lose another forty-seven religious: 1,338. 42%

On 1 January 2024 there were 1,316, twenty-two fewer than a year earlier. 43%

On 1 January 2025 it seems losses have almost stopped, with only seven religious lost: 1,309. They remain at 43%

Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts (Mallorca): There were 152 in 1973 and in 2013 128 remained, one more than the previous year. They have lost only 17%. On 1 January 2014 they had risen to 131, three more. The loss has fallen to 15%. On 1 January 2015 they continued to increase, reaching 133, two more than in the previous year’s count. The loss is now 13%.

On 1 January 2016 they had lost two religious and only 131 remained. They return to a 15% loss.

On 1 January 2017 they remain at 131 and therefore at 15%, although all are a year older.

On 1 January 2018 there were 130, one fewer than on the same date a year earlier. The decrease continues at 15%

On 1 January 2019 they rose to 134, four more than the previous year, so the decrease would fall to 12%. These good numbers do not square with the abandonment of houses such as the emblematic Lluch.

On 1 January 2020 they continue to rise: 136, two more than the previous year. The decrease falls to 11%

On 1 January 2021 it seems they no longer dare to keep recording increases and acknowledge the loss of nine religious; 127 remain. The loss is now 17% and seems very low to me

On 1 January 2022 they lose another six religious: 121. 21%

On 1 January 2023 they gain two: 123. 20%. Will it be true? They grow and leave Lluch?

On 1 January 2024 they lose four: 118. 23%

On 1 January 2025 they tell us it is now time to grow: 122, four more than a year earlier. 20%

Combonians: In 1967 there were 1,740 and on 1 January 2013, 1,693. Although they had lost thirty-nine religious compared with 2012. Truly spectacular figures. The decrease is 3%. On 1 January 2014 there were 1,673, twenty fewer than the previous year. They have lost only 4%. On 1 January 2015 they had fallen to 1,669, four fewer than the previous year. The loss remains at 4%.

On 1 January 2016 they had a slight increase of nine religious, reaching 1,678. The missions continue to attract. They remain at the excellent figure of a 4% decrease.

On 1 January 2017 they fell to 1,662, sixteen fewer than a year earlier. They lose 5%, an extraordinary result.

2017 was not good for them, for on 1 January 2018 there were 1,607, fifty-five fewer than a year earlier. They decrease 7%

On 1 January 2019 they lost only seven religious: 1,600. The decrease rises to 8%

On 1 January 2020 they gain twenty-three religious: 1,623. The loss falls to 7%. Excellent numbers

On 1 January 2021 they return to reality: 1,576 remain, forty-seven fewer than the previous year. The loss is 10%

On 1 January 2022 thirty-two have been lost: 1,544. 12%

On 1 January 2023 there were fifteen fewer religious: 1,529. 13%

On 1 January 2024 there were forty more religious: 1,569. The loss is reduced to 10%. Is it true?

On 1 January 2025 reductions return with forty-six religious lost: 1,523. They return to 13%
