The Church celebrates this Tuesday, November 3, the memorial of Saint Martin de Porres, a Dominican religious born in Lima in 1579 and known for his dedication to the poor, the sick, and those suffering some form of marginalization. His life was marked by a profound Eucharistic spirituality and a charity that made him one of the most beloved saints of Peru and all of Latin America.
Canonized by John XXIII on May 6, 1962, Saint Martin represents one of the best-known testimonies of holiness lived in humble tasks and in daily service to one’s neighbor.
A life dedicated to the service of others
Martin was born in Lima, the son of a Spaniard and a free woman of African and American descent.
During his youth he learned tasks related to the care of the sick, knowledge that he later put at the service of those in need.
He entered the Dominican convent of Our Lady of the Rosary in Lima, where he developed a life of prayer, obedience, and service.
His responsibilities included domestic work and the care of the sick, to whom he provided food, medicines, and care.
Dominican tradition preserves numerous testimonies of his charity, especially toward poor people who lacked resources to receive assistance.
The Eucharist and prayer, the center of his life
In the homily of his canonization, John XXIII highlighted Saint Martin’s profound devotion to Jesus Christ crucified, to the Blessed Eucharist, and to the Virgin Mary.
The Pontiff recalled that the religious spent long periods in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and sought to receive communion as frequently as possible.
That life of prayer was inseparable from his dedication to others.
John XXIII also highlighted that Martin forgave offenses, sought to lead sinners toward conversion, and attended to people of different social backgrounds.
The saint of charity
Martin de Porres’s reputation for holiness began to spread during his lifetime, especially because of his humility and his availability to those who came seeking help.
He died in Lima on November 3, 1639, after a life dedicated to religious service.
His canonization took place a few months before the opening of the Second Vatican Council, a circumstance that John XXIII linked to the call of the entire Church to a life of greater holiness.
The figure of Saint Martin de Porres continues to remind us that Christian charity is born of love for God and finds its concrete expression in the care of those who suffer, especially the most needy.
