A small shrine dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary and Friar Leopoldo, located near Tiro Pichón in Ceuta, has been destroyed in what bears all the hallmarks of an attack on a Catholic place of worship.
A local resident reported to El Pueblo de Ceuta the state in which she found the site, frequented for years by the faithful who left images, prints, and other religious objects there. «It made my stomach turn to see that they had destroyed this small place of worship,» she recounted.
The identity of the perpetrators is unknown, but the area has seen the massive settlement of large groups of immigrants following the deliberate opening of borders last July. The attack comes in a Ceuta overwhelmed after the mass entry of thousands of people from Morocco, with settlements in streets, beaches, and hills, security problems, and growing degradation of various public spaces.
The complainant also warned of the accumulation of garbage and waste in the area and called for greater surveillance and cleaning.
The episode once again highlights a crisis that is not merely humanitarian. Ceuta also faces problems of coexistence, security, and territorial control, while much of the institutional and ecclesial discourse remains focused almost exclusively on an «unlimited welcome» that borders on the absurd.
The response of the Spanish Church is particularly confusing when it acknowledges that Ceuta is «overwhelmed,» but barely addresses issues such as the limits of reception, the right of States to control their borders, or the protection of host communities. Catholic doctrine requires respect for the dignity of the immigrant, but does not demand ignoring the effects of massive and uncontrolled immigration.
In this context, the destruction of a place dedicated to the Virgin should not be reduced to a simple act of vandalism. When the target is a space of prayer and its religious symbols, the element of hatred toward the faith cannot be dismissed as irrelevant.
