Pope Leo XIV will personally carry the Blessed Sacrament during the Corpus Christi procession he will preside over in Madrid on June 8. The Pontiff will walk through the streets of the city center under a canopy, accompanied by seminarians who will be responsible for supporting him during the Eucharistic cortege.
Although it was initially planned that Madrid’s historic monstrance would occupy the center of the procession, Pope Leo XIV has chosen to carry the Sacred Host himself throughout the route.
A deeply Eucharistic gesture
Sources familiar with the preparations explain to InfoVaticana that the Pope will process carrying the Blessed Sacrament under a canopy, following the Church’s traditional practice. The image will recall the great Eucharistic processions presided over by pontiffs and will underscore the central role that Pope Leo XIV wishes to give to Eucharistic adoration during his visit to Spain.
The procession will begin after the Mass celebrated by the Holy Father in front of the Palacio de Cibeles and will proceed along Calle Alcalá and part of Gran Vía before returning to the starting point.
The historic monstrance will play a prominent role at the end of the route
The historic monstrance of Madrid, linked for centuries to the celebration of Corpus Christi in the capital, will continue to hold a prominent place in the ceremony. It is not only a masterpiece of Renaissance goldsmithing, but also a testament to the close connection that Madrid’s civil institutions maintained for centuries with Eucharistic worship.
At the conclusion of the route, the Sacred Host will be placed in the monstrance for the final adoration. After a new incensation and the prayers prescribed by the rite, Pope Leo XIV will impart the solemn blessing with the Blessed Sacrament before the thousands of faithful gathered in Plaza de Cibeles.
That a monstrance belonging to the City Council should once again occupy a central place in a ceremony presided over by the Roman Pontiff underscores the singular character of a tradition that has survived political, social, and religious changes for more than four hundred and fifty years.
One of the most anticipated images of the papal visit
The Corpus Christi procession constitutes one of the central events of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic journey to Spain. The Pope’s decision to personally carry the Blessed Sacrament adds marked symbolism to a celebration that will bring together numerous faithful, pilgrims, and representatives of the Spanish Church.
