During the Pentecost celebrations, one can see versatile ways of celebrating the faith and conveying joy as a gift of the Spirit. Some appreciate it, others do not look upon it favorably.
One that circulated on social media this weekend was the curious dance that the bishop of San Juan de los Lagos, José Leopoldo González, performed at the end of a celebration when, encouraging a predominantly young audience, he showcased the steps of El Motorcito.
“What do I know about half-baked sows…” the bishop said as he began to jump while the young people’s cheers could be heard at the moves the prelate made, leaping on the platform as everyone applauded the gesture, calling it human and approachable regardless of the liturgical signs and space.
The bishop recalled that moment when, in July 2025, in Tepatitlán de Morelos, he celebrated the Diocesan Youth Day and was seen with a large group of attendees encouraging him to dance. On that occasion it was well received and he was regarded as a joyful pastor empathetic to young people.
José Leopoldo González González, 71 years old, is the VII bishop of San Juan de los Lagos, a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, took possession of the episcopal see on May 25, 2023, succeeding the current archbishop of San Luis Potosí, Jorge Alberto Cavazos Arizpe. He was ordained bishop in 2006 at the age of 50 to serve as auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara by the imposition of hands of the archbishop emeritus of Guadalajara, Cardinal Juan Sandoval Íñiguez
