The Crisis of Religious Women 2025, V (Annuario Pontificio 2026)

Congregatio Jesu: In the second installment of this year’s series, I stated that I had not found the 2025 data for the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Irish). A kind reader has corrected my mistake: La Cigüeña did not find data in the Pontifical Yearbook on the religious of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary because they no longer exist. They have merged with the German branch, also founded by Mary Ward.

Together, both congregations are now called Congregatio Iesu (I believe that was the name of the German one).

Kind regards,

These are their figures for the merged group: 1,906

Little Sisters of the Poor: Founded in France in 1839 by Jeanne Jugan. There were 5,099 in 1973 and by 2013 only 2,430 remained. The congregation lost 53% in the spring. As of January 1, 2014, there were 2,358, seventy-two fewer than the previous year. The loss had already reached 54%. By January 1, 2015, numbers continued to fall alarmingly, with only 2,291 left, sixty-seven fewer than a year earlier. The decline now stands at 56%.

No improvement a year later: on January 1, 2016, there were only 2,210. Seventy-one fewer than the previous year. The loss has now reached 57%.

And they are not improving. On January 1, 2017, they had dropped to 2,155. Fifty-five fewer religious. The loss rises to 58%.

The unstoppable descent continues, 66 fewer in one more year: 2,014, on the verge of losing the two-thousand reference point, when there were more than five thousand. They have already lost 61% of the institute.

That threshold was already crossed on January 1, 2020: 1,935. Seventy-nine fewer than a year earlier. The decline now stands at 63%.

On January 1, 2021, there were 1,839, ninety-six fewer than a year earlier. 64%

On January 1, 2022, fifty-two more religious were lost: 1,787. 65%

On January 1, 2023, there were 1,711, seventy-six fewer than a year earlier. The loss for the congregation stands at 67%.

On January 1, 2024, 1,641, seventy more disappeared. 68%

On January 1, 2025, fifty-seven were lost: 1,584. 69%

Little Sisters of the Poor of Maiquetía: A Venezuelan foundation from 1889 with a small presence in Spain. In 1973 there were 334, and forty years later only 155 remained. They lost 54%. They continue on the path to extinction. As of January 1, 2014, there were 149, six fewer than the previous year. The loss is now 56%. The new data confirm their dire situation. By January 1, 2015, barely 133 remained, sixteen gone in one year. Their decline has now reached 61%.

The past year was not bad. They gained three religious: 136. But their situation is so poor that several years of growth would be needed to avert the threat of closure. The loss has decreased by one point. It now stands at 60%.

Last year’s gain was a fleeting illusion. On January 1, 2017, there were already 128, eight fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 62%.

A year later, on January 1, 2018, they remain at 128 and the loss at 62%.

2018 was also not good: five more religious were lost: 123. The decline rises to 63%.

On January 1, 2020, two more religious left: 121. The decline is 64%.

On January 1, 2021, two more disappeared: 119. 65%

On January 1, 2022, they remain at 119. 65%

On January 1, 2023, 112, with seven lost. 67%

On January 1, 2024, two religious short: 110. 68%

On January 1, 2025, six more lost: 104. 69%

Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus: Of German foundation with limited presence in Spain. In 1973 there were 1,619 in 23 houses. By January 1, 2016, barely 478 remained, though the number of houses had risen to 59. They have lost 71% of the congregation along the way, so their situation is dire.

On January 1, 2018, there were only 453, twenty-five fewer than two years earlier. They have now lost 73%.

A year later, on January 1, 2019, there were 445, eight fewer than a year earlier. Still at 73%.

On January 1, 2020, fourteen more religious lost: 431. The decline stands at 74%.

I have not found them in the 2022 Annuario.

On January 1, 2022, there are 417, fourteen fewer than two years ago. 75%

On January 1, 2023, still 417. 75%

On January 1, 2024, 388, twenty-nine fewer than a year earlier. 77%

On January 1, 2025, I cannot find them in the Annuario. Have they disappeared?

Daughters of Christ the King: Founded in Granada in 1876 by José Gras Granollers. There were 641 in 1973 and 393 in 2013. They have lost 40% along the way. On January 1, 2014, there were 378, fifteen fewer than the previous year. The loss is now 42%. And they continue to decline: by January 1, 2015, barely 363 remained, fifteen fewer than the previous year. They are now at 44% loss.

The debacle continues. In 2016, eleven more religious left, surely together with God. 351 remain. They have already lost 46% of the congregation.

On January 1, 2017, 342 remained, nine fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now 47%.

On January 1, 2018, 334 remained, eight fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 48%.

On January 1, 2019, there were 332, two fewer than a year earlier. The loss rises to 49%.

On January 1, 2020, 323 remained, nine fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 50%.

On January 1, 2021, nineteen more religious lost: 304. 53%

On January 1, 2022, ten religious lost: 294. 55%

On January 1, 2023, eleven disappeared: 283. 56%

On January 1, 2024, sixteen more lost: 267. 59%

On January 1, 2025, seven more disappeared: 260. 60%

Daughters of Jesus: Founded in Salamanca by Cándida María de Jesús in 1871. There were 1,413 in 1973 and by 2013 only 928 remained; they have lost 35%. On January 1, 2014, there were 908, twenty fewer than the previous year. They have lost 36%. By January 1, 2015, they continue to decline, with only 885 left, twenty-three fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now 38%.

2015 was not a bad year for them. They gained thirteen religious. They number 898. The decline dropped to 37%.

The following year was catastrophic: on January 1, 2017, only 814 remained. Eighty-four religious were lost. The decline is at 43%.

On January 1, 2018, 792 remained, twenty-two fewer than a year earlier. The loss is at 44%.

They continue to decline; on January 1, 2019, there were only 760, thirty-two fewer than the previous year. 47%

On January 1, 2020, disaster: fifty-two religious disappeared: 708. The loss rises to 50%.

On January 1, 2021, four more lost: 704. 51%

On January 1, 2022, thirty-eight religious lost: 665. 53%

On January 1, 2023, 640, twenty-five fewer than a year earlier: 640. 55%

On January 1, 2024, twenty-eight lost; 612. 57%

Daughters of the Cross, Sisters of St. Andrew: French foundation of 1807. Mainly present in the Basque Country. In 1973 there were 1,450 and by 2013 barely 491 remained. In free fall. 67% of the congregation has been lost. They continue their race toward death. By January 1, 2014, only 468 remained, twenty-three fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now 68%. And it will increase, as by January 1, 2015, they had dropped to 440, twenty-eight fewer than a year earlier. They are now at a 70% loss.

The ruin progresses. 2015 said goodbye to twelve religious. 428 remain. The decline is at 71%.

And the decline continues: by January 1, 2017, barely 405 remained, twenty-three fewer than the previous year. They have already lost 73% of the congregation.

The ruin does not lessen but grows. On January 1, 2018, there were only 385, twenty fewer than a year earlier, and the decline now reaches 74%.

Straight toward disappearance: on January 1, 2019, they had already reduced to 356, twenty-nine fewer than a year earlier. They have already lost 76% of the congregation, which, given what we have been saying, is now 80% or more. Their end, at this rate, will come soon.

The ruin accelerates, as on January 1, 2020, thirteen more religious left: 343. The decline rises to 77%.

On January 1, 2021, twenty-four more religious were lost: 319. 78%

On January 1, 2025, 257 remained, seventeen fewer than a year earlier. 83%

Daughters of the Immaculate Conception of Buenos Aires: Founded in Argentina in 1904. In 1991 they had three houses in Spain. In 1973 there were 212 and by 1973 only 108 remained. They have lost 50% of the religious along the way. On January 1, 2014, there were 106, two fewer than the previous year. They continue with a 50% loss. A year later, on January 1, 2015, there were 100. Six fewer than a year earlier; the decline has now reached 53%.

They have already lost the one-hundred mark. In one year, three fewer: 97. The loss is now at 55%. But the departure of three, given their small number, means two points of decline. A bleak future.

This is confirmed year after year. On January 1, 2017, they continued to decline: 94, three fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 56%.

Decline that does not stop; on January 1, 2018, there were only 90, four fewer than a year earlier, with a decline of 58%.

On January 1, 2019, 88 remained, two fewer than a year earlier. They lose 59%.

On January 1, 2022, the collapse continues; only 70 remain, seven fewer than a year earlier. 67%

On January 1, 2023, two disappeared: 68. 68%

On January 1, 2024, three left: 65. 70%

On January 1, 2025, one more disappears: 64. Still at 70%.

Daughters of the Parish, Auxiliaries of the Good Shepherd. Founded by Ona de Echave in Pamplona in 1948. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were only 14, so it is possible they have even disappeared.

Daughters of the Virgin of Sorrows: Founded in Trujillo (Cáceres) in 1919 by Antonia Hernández and Juan Tena. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 140.

Daughters of the Virgin for Christian Formation. Founded in Alcuéscar (Cáceres) in 1941. They also do not appear in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 50. The last three must be of diocesan right.

Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesians): Founded by St. John Bosco and Mother Mazzarello in 1872. There were 18,350 in 1973 and forty years later 13,454. Although they have lost 5,000 religious, that represents a 27% decline, which many congregations would wish for themselves. On January 1, 2014, there were 13,274, one hundred eighty fewer than in 2013. They lose 28%. The days are not good for the Salesians either, who continue to lose religious, and by January 1, 2015, they had dropped to 13,057, two hundred seventeen fewer than a year earlier. Today it is not risky to say they have lost the thirteen-thousand mark, although that figure is still enormous compared to what we are seeing. A 29% loss would even be wonderful given the circumstances, but unfortunately it seems that will increase.

And it increases. We will not pretend to be prophets by predicting the loss of the thirteen-thousand mark. It was an evidence within anyone’s reach. On January 1, 2016, only 12,773 remained. That 284 religious disappeared in one year is a very high figure. Although they still have very high numbers. They are now at a 31% decline.

On January 1, 2017, the descent continues: 12,545, 228 fewer Salesians. The decline is at 32%.

On January 1, 2018, they continue to decrease: 12,286. Two hundred fifty-nine fewer than a year earlier. There are still so many that there is no short-term survival threat. The decline now rises to 34%.

On January 1, 2019, they had lost 121 more Salesians: 12,065. 35%

On January 1, 2020, they continue to lose Salesians in droves, no less than 448 in one year. 11,838 on January 1, 2020. They lose 36%.

On January 1, 2021, 303 disappeared, 11,535. The loss rises to 38%.

On January 1, 2022, 269 were lost: 11,266. 39%

On January 1, 2023, 265 have evaporated: 11,001. 41%

On January 1, 2024, 209 lost: 10,792. 42%

On January 1, 2025, 284 religious disappeared: 10,508. 44%

Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church: Founded by Matilde Téllez in Béjar (Salamanca) in 1875. There were 368 in 1973 and 214 survive in 2013. 42%. On January 1, 2014, 205 remained, nine fewer than the previous year. The loss is now 45%. By January 1, 2015, only 198 remained, seven fewer than the previous year and in an already very reduced congregation. They are now at a 47% decline.

On January 1, 2017, 191 remained, seven fewer than two years earlier. The loss is at 49%.

On January 1, 2018, one of those increases that is hard to believe: they have six more religious, 197. Well, let us be credulous: 47% loss.

They continue to rise: 199 on January 1, 2019, two more than a year earlier. The decline drops to 46%.

On January 1, 2020, they lose three religious. 196. Back to 47%.

The year 2020 was terrible, as nineteen religious disappeared; 177 remain. 52%

On January 1, 2022, the lean years continue. Fifty-three religious disappeared: 124. 67%

On January 1, 2023, they gain 46, so last year must have been an error. There would be 170, seven fewer than in 2021. So the loss would be 54%.

On January 1, 2024, nineteen disappeared: 151. 59%

On January 1, 2025, three lost: 148. 60%

Daughters of Mary, Religious of the Pious Schools: Founded in Figueres (Girona) by Paula Montal in 1829. In 1973 there were 1,033 and forty years later only 643. They lost 38%. On January 1, 2014, there were 634, nine fewer than the previous year. They have lost 39% of their members. By January 1, 2015, their downward line continues and barely 617 remain, seventeen fewer than the previous year. The decline has reached 41%.

On January 1, 2017, 602 remained. In one year they lost fifteen more religious. They are now at a 42% decline.

On January 1, 2017, there were already 583, nineteen fewer religious. The decline rises to 44%.

On January 1, 2023, fifteen disappeared: 516. 51%

On January 1, 2024, two more left: 514. 51%

Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament: Founded in Mexico in 1910. In 1991 they had six houses in Spain. In 1973 there were 756; in 2013, 635. Only 17% of the institute has been lost along the way. On January 1, 2014, 629 remained, six fewer than the previous year. The loss remains at 17%. The descent, however, intensifies, as by January 1, 2015, they had dropped to 603, twenty-six fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 21%.

Everything continues to worsen. On January 1, 2016, they had dropped to 588. Fifteen fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 23%.

On January 1, 2017, there were 587, only one fewer than the previous year. Still at 23%.

On January 1, 2018, a large setback: 558, with a loss of thirty religious. The loss rises to 28%.

A year later, still 558.

On January 1, 2020, thirty-four religious disappeared: 524. The loss is at 31%.

On January 1, 2021, thirteen more left: 511. The loss rises two points: 33%.

On January 1, 2022, seven religious lost: 504. 34%

On January 1, 2023, fifteen fewer: 489. 36%

On January 1, 2024, thirteen more lost: 476. 38%

On January 1, 2025, they increase by twenty-five: 501. Do we believe it? 34%

Mercedarian Missionaries of Berriz: Founded in Berriz (Biscay) by Margarita López de Maturana in 1930. In 1973 there were 681; in 2013, 384. They lost 44%. On January 1, 2014, there were 373, eleven fewer than the previous year. The loss is now at 46%. And the descent continues, as by January 1, 2015, only 362 remained, eleven fewer than the previous year. The decline is now at 47%.

They continue to plummet. On January 1, 2016, barely 349 remained. Thirteen fewer than a year earlier. They have already lost 49% of the congregation.

On January 1, 2017, 332 remained, seventeen fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now at 52%.

On January 1, 2018, 320 remained, twelve fewer than a year earlier; the loss is at 54%.

On January 1, 2019, they had dropped to 308, another twelve fewer than the past year. 55%

On January 1, 2020, fifteen religious lost; 293 remain. They lose 57%.

On January 1, 2021, nineteen disappeared: 274. 60%

On January 1, 2022, ten more lost: 264. 62%

On January 1, 2024, nine lost: 241. 65%

On January 1, 2025, ten disappeared: 231. 67%

Minimum Congregation of Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Founded in Vic by Juan Collell in 1891. In 1973, 184; in 2013, 94. 50% of the religious have been lost. An uncertain future. The hemorrhage continues. On January 1, 2014, 87 remained, seven fewer than the previous year. Thus they have already lost 53% of the religious. By January 1, 2015, miraculously they had increased to 97, ten more religious in one year. An error in the Annuario? Although miracles, when they occur, happen in terminal cases. No one attributes a miracle to the end of a cold. We will see if that increase consolidates. I am very skeptical. The decline would have reduced to 48%.

Well, my skepticism was well-founded. A year after such a spectacular increase—ten religious in a dying congregation—they dropped to 90. Back to 53%.

And on January 1, 2017, there were 87, three fewer than a year earlier. Still at 53%.

On January 1, 2018, only 85 remained, two fewer than a year earlier. They lose 54%.

A year later (2019), 80, five fewer. 57%

On January 1, 2020, two more religious lost: 78. The loss rises to 58%.

On January 1, 2021, two fewer: 76. 59%

On January 1, 2022, two more lost: 74. 60%

On January 1, 2023, two more disappeared: 72. 61%

On January 1, 2024, five lost. 67. 64%

On January 1, 2025, one lost: 66. 65%

Sisters of Mercy of Moissac: Founded in France in 1807. With only one house in Spain in 1991. Perhaps disappeared today. In 1973 there were 106; in 2013 only 31 remained. They have lost 71% of the religious and their disappearance seems imminent. They still survive. On January 1, 2014, there were 30, one fewer than the previous year. That cannot last much longer. The loss is at 72%. A year later there is one more: 31. Nothing changes. In the throes of agony.

They resist dying. A year later (January 1, 2016), they were back to 30. Still at 72% decline, although we believe they are on the eve of their definitive disappearance.

On January 1, 2017, they are again 31, one more than the previous year. Still at 72%.

On January 1, 2018, back to 30, one fewer than the previous year, and still at 72% decline.

On January 1, 2019, one fewer: 29. 73%

On January 1, 2020, four religious have disappeared; 25 elderly women remain. The loss is now at 77%, which, since it refers to 1973, will truly be around 80%. Any day now they will disappear.

On January 1, 2021, still 25 and 77%.

On January 1, 2022, one fewer: 24. 78%

On January 1, 2023, one more lost: 23. 79%

On January 1, 2024, ruin precipitates; they lose six religious: 17. 84%. Those have practically already died.

On January 1, 2025, one more lost: 16. 85%

Sisters of Mercy of Sées: Also a French foundation from 1823. Also with a single house in Spain in 1991. There were 627 in 1973; by 2013 only 122 remained. These have lost more: 81%. They will not survive. On January 1, 2014, there were 124, two more than the previous year. Still at 81% loss. They continue to decline, as by January 1, 2015, only 120 remained, four fewer than a year earlier, in which there was a minimal recovery. Still at that tragic 81% loss of the congregation.

That does not improve. On January 1, 2016, they had already dropped to 114. Six fewer than in 2015. They are now at an 82% decline.

On January 1, 2017, there were only 100, fourteen fewer than a year earlier. They have already lost 85% of the Congregation.

On January 1, 2018, they increased by three: 103. They lose 84%.

On January 1, 2019, 115. Twelve more than a year earlier. Highly suspicious unless they have annexed another dying congregation. 82%

On January 1, 2020, they continue to gain religious, now eight; 123. Inexplicable, dying as they are. Are they inventing admissions? The loss drops to 81%.

On January 1, 2021, no less than seventeen religious disappear. 106 remain. 84%

On January 1, 2022, two lost: 104. 84%

On January 1, 2023, six more disappear. 98. 85%

On January 1, 2024, five more disappeared: 93. 86%. Others about to turn off the light.

On January 1, 2025, three more lost: 90. 86%

Augustinian Recollect Missionaries: Founded by Bishop Francisco Javier Ochoa Ullate OAR in Monteagudo (Navarra). In 1973, 262; in 2013, 228. They have only lost 13%. On January 1, 2014, 225 remained, three fewer than the previous year. The loss is at 15%. And they continue to decline, as by January 1, 2015, there were 222, three fewer than a year earlier. The loss rises to 16%.

They do not improve. 2015 ended with a loss of three more religious. Only 219 remain. 17% decline.

On January 1, 2017, 210 remained, nine fewer than the previous year. The decline is at 20%.

On January 1, 2018, 207, three fewer than the previous year. They lose 21%.

Five more left in 2018: 202 on January 1, 2019. 24%

On January 1, 2020, seven more religious lost: 195. 26%

On January 1, 2021, it was especially adverse. Only 179 religious remain, sixteen fewer than a year earlier, so the loss rises six points: 32%.

On January 1, 2022, four religious lost: 175. 34%

On January 1, 2023, thirteen disappeared: 162. 39%

On January 1, 2024, five lost: 157. 41%

On January 1, 2025, four lost: 153. 42%

Comboni Missionaries: Founded by Comboni in Italy in 1872. In 1973, 2,280; in 2013, 1,380. They have lost 40%. On January 1, 2014, there were 1,346, thirty-four fewer than the previous year. The loss is at 41%. By January 1, 2015, there were 1,325, twenty-one fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 42%.

They continue to decrease. On January 1, 2016, only 1,289 remained. Thirty-six fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now at 44%.

On January 1, 2017, there were 1,256, thirty-three fewer than the previous year. The decline is at 45%.

On January 1, 2018, 1,226 remained, thirty fewer than the previous year. They lose 47%.

On January 1, 2019, 1,187, thirty-nine fewer than a year earlier. The decline rises to 48%.

On January 1, 2021, forty-five more left; 1,100 remain. 52%

On January 1, 2022, forty-six religious lost: 1,054. 54%

On January 1, 2023, 1,026 with a loss of twenty-eight. 55%

On January 1, 2024, they lose the one-thousand mark and twenty-eight religious again: 998. 57%

On January 1, 2025, thirty-four religious disappear: 964. 58%

Missionaries of the Heart of Mary: Founded in Olot (Girona) by Joaquín Masmitjá in 1848. In 1973, 361; by 2013 only 154 remained. They have lost 58%. On January 1, 2014, there were 147, seven fewer than the previous year. The loss is now at 60%. By January 1, 2015, one of those implausible increases that make one think of an error in the Annuario, which hopefully is not. It gives the figure of 186 religious, thirty-nine more than a year earlier. Something that is not usual. If so, the reduction of the institute would have dropped to 49%.

It was an error in the Annuario or possibly even of my sight, which is not what it once was. But that was a mirage of the Vatican or mine. On January 1, 2016, they are already at the logical figures: 138. Nine fewer than in 2014. The decline is now at 62%.

And they decrease more rapidly. On January 1, 2017, there were only 127, eleven fewer than the previous year. The decline is at 65%.

And on January 1, 2018, 121 remained, six religious lost in one year. The loss passes to 67%.

A year later, 115. Six fewer on January 1, 2019. They have already lost 69% of the congregation.

On January 1, 2020, they lose six more religious: 109. The loss is now at 70%.

On January 1, 2021, 102 remain, seven fewer than a year earlier. 72%

On January 1, 2022, 101 remained, one fewer than the previous year. 73%

On January 1, 2023, fourteen lost: 87. 76%

On January 1, 2024, nine more disappear: 78. 79%. With that, they approach disappearance dangerously.

On January 1, 2025, one lost: 77. 79%

Crusader Missionaries of the Church: Founded by Nazaria Ignacia March in Oruro (Bolivia) in 1925 and with notable presence in Spain. In 1973, 486; in 2013, 353. They lose 28%. On January 1, 2014, there were 349, four fewer than on the same date in 2013. They lose 29%. By January 1, 2015, 334 remained, fifteen religious lost in one year. The loss is at 31%.

On January 1, 2016, they continued to decrease, as only 328 remained. Six fewer than a year earlier. The decline has reached 33%.

On January 1, 2017, they had increased by five religious: 333. So the decline drops to 32%.

On January 1, 2018, they return to the 328 of two years earlier with a loss of five religious compared to the previous year. So the percentage of loss returns to 33%.

On January 1, 2019, still 328.

On January 1, 2020, no less than thirty-one religious vanish: 297. The loss shoots up to 39%, six points.

2020 was also not good, as seventeen more left. 280 remain. 43% have gone.

On January 1, 2022, only one religious disappeared; 279. 43%

On January 1, 2023, nine left: 270. 45%

On January 1, 2024, the disappeared were twelve: 258. 47%

On January 1, 2025, six more left: 252. 49%

Missionaries of Parochial Action: Founded by Bishop Pérez Platero in Segovia in 1942. In 1973 there were 250; in 2013, 211. They have lost only 16%. On January 1, 2014, there were 212, one more than the previous year. Still at 16%. A year later the data are less favorable, as by January 1, 2015, only 205 remained, seven fewer than in 2014. The loss is at 18%.

2015 was not an especially bad year, as they lost only one religious. 204 remain. Their problem is not that year but how few they are. The following years could be tragic. They are at a 19% decline.

On January 1, 2018, 201 remained, three fewer than a year earlier. They lose 20%.

195 on January 1, 2019. Six fewer than a year earlier. The decline at 22%.

On January 1, 2020, they gain one religious: 196. Still at a very good 22%, although it refers to 1973.

On January 1, 2021, 190 remained, six fewer than a year earlier. 24%

On January 1, 2022, two religious had been lost: 188. 25%.

On January 1, 2023, eleven disappeared: 177. 30%

On January 1, 2024, mysteriously they increase by five: 182. The loss drops to 28%. Do we believe it?

On January 1, 2025, nine lost: 173. 31%

Missionaries of Christ Jesus: Founded in Javier (Navarra) by María Camino Sanz Orrio in 1944. There were 260 in 1973 and 302 in 2013. Another congregation that sees its religious increase. Now they have decreased by eight compared to the previous year and are 294 as of January 1, 2014, but still more than in 1973. In 2015, surely due to my clumsiness, I do not find them in the Annuario.

And in 2017 I still do not find them.

And the same can be said for 2018.

On January 1, 2019, they continue to decline: 278, but still more than in 1973.

On January 1, 2020, they rise by eight: 286.

On January 1, 2022, they drop by sixteen: 270. Still more than in 1973.

On January 1, 2023, they drop by eight: 262, still exceeding those of 1973.

On January 1, 2024, they lose two: 260. The same as in 1973. Miraculous.

On January 1, 2025, still 260.

Missionaries of Christ the Priest: Founded in Málaga in 1955 by María Dolores Segarra and Sebastián Carrasco. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 32.

Missionaries of Jesus, Mary and Joseph: Founded by Dolores Domingo in Madrid in 1944. In 1973, 166; in 2013, 123. They lose 26%. On January 1, 2014, there were 125, two more than the previous year. The loss has dropped to 25%. By January 1, 2015, there were 122, three fewer than a year earlier, so the decline is again at 26%.

On January 1, 2016, they increase again and are now 129. Seven more than the previous year. They are at a 26% decline.

On January 1, 2018, they continue to grow and are now 132, three more than two years ago. The loss is at 21%.

A year later (2019), 131, one fewer. 22%

On January 1, 2020, five more religious: 136. The loss decreases to 19%.

On January 1, 2021, still 136 and 19%.

On January 1, 2022, four lost: 132. 21%

On January 1, 2023, five disappeared: 127. 24%

On January 1, 2024, one lost: 126. 25%

On January 1, 2025, two lost: 124. 26%

Missionaries of Charity and Providence: Founded in Madrid in 1941 by Luisa Zancajo de la Mata. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 68.

Missionaries of Christian Doctrine: Founded in Seville in 1878 by Francisco García and Mercedes Trullás. In 1973 there were 251; in 2013, 126. Half the institute has gone. On January 1, 2014, 121 remained, five fewer than the previous year. They have lost 52%. By January 1, 2015, only 118 remained, three fewer than the previous year. The loss is at 53%.

They continue on their downward line. On January 1, 2016, there were 116. Two fewer than a year earlier. They already lose 54%.

The data get much worse; a year later, on January 1, 2018, eleven more religious were lost and only 105 remain. One hundred five elderly women. The loss is now at 59% and, as in so many others, without rational possibilities of recovery.

A year later (January 1, 2019), there were only 101, four fewer than a year earlier, already losing 60%.

On January 1, 2020, one religious disappears: 100. 61% loss.

On January 1, 2021, another religious had been lost: 99. 61%

On January 1, 2022, four lost: 95. 63%

On January 1, 2023, three lost: 92. 64%.

On January 1, 2024, three more disappear: 89. 65%

On January 1, 2025, two lost: 87. 66%

Missionaries of the Immaculate Conception: Founded by Alfonsa Cavin in Mataró in 1850. There were 716 in 1873; in 2013, 352. Others who have lost 51%. On January 1, 2014, they continued to decline. Only 337 remained, fifteen fewer than the previous year. They have lost 53% of the institute. I have not found them in the Annuario, undoubtedly due to my clumsiness.

If they are the Missionaries of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I found them again in the 2017 Annuario. There are 326. Eleven fewer than in 2014. They are now at a 55% decline.

On January 1, 2018, 306 remained, twenty fewer than two years earlier. They already lose 58%.

A year later, they had lost another twenty religious and on January 1, 2019, 284 remained. The decline is now at 61%.

On January 1, 2020, fourteen religious have been left behind: 270. The loss rises to 63%.

On January 1, 2021, three religious lost: 267. Still at 63%.

On January 1, 2022, nine lost: 258. 64%

On January 1, 2023, nine more lost: 249. 66%

On January 1, 2024, again without nine religious: 240. 67%

On January 2, 2025, nine more lost: 231. 68%

Missionaries of the Claretian Institution: Founded by Luis Pujol in Vic in 1951. I do not find them in the Annuario: In 1991 there were 29.

Missionaries of Providence: Founded in Salamanca in 1953 by Joaquín Alonso Hernández. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 58.

Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary: Founded in Mallorca in 1891. In 1986 there were 191; in 2013, 156. They lost 19%, but only in 28 years. On January 1, 2014, there were 154, two fewer than the previous year. They have already lost 20%. By January 1, 2015, they had increased to 164, ten more than in 2014. Will it be true? If so, the decline would be at 15%.

But as I have said more than once, joy lasts little in the poor man’s house. On January 1, 2016, they dropped to 158, six fewer than the previous year, although four more than in 2014. The loss is now at 18%.

On January 1, 2017, 157 remained, with the loss of one religious. The decline remains at 18%.

On January 1, 2018, they had lost one religious and 156 remained. The loss is at 19%.

A year later (January 1, 2019), they maintain the same figures.

On January 1, 2020, eight religious lost: 148. The loss rises to 23%.

On January 1, 2021, there is one more religious: 149. 22%

On January 1, 2022, there are four more religious: 153. 20%

Missionaries of Mary Immaculate: Founded by María Francisca Ramón in Madrid in 1952. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 32.

Missionaries of Mary Mediatrix: Founded in Bayona (Pontevedra) in 1942 by Rosario Fernández Pereira. In 1986, 185; in 2013, 238. Another congregation that sees the number of its religious increase. And they continue on that line. On January 1, 2014, there were 244, six more than the previous year. A year later, barely one fewer: 243.

But 2015 was tragic and by the end of it only 217 remained. Twenty-seven fewer than a year earlier. Although still more than in 1973.

On January 1, 2017, there were 215, two fewer than a year earlier. Still more than in 1973.

On January 1, 2018, one more: 216.

On January 1, 2021, four more than the previous year: 215.

On January 1, 2022, one religious lost: 214.

On January 1, 2023, still 214.

On January 1, 2024, they increase by three: 217. To congratulate them effusively.

On January 1, 2025, still 217.

Missionaries of Our Lady of Africa (White Sisters): Founded by Cardinal Lavigerie in 1869 in Algeria. In 1971 there were 2,030; in 2013, 759. They have lost 63%. And they continue in rapid decline. On January 1, 2014, there were only 727, thirty-two fewer than the previous year. They are now at a 65% loss. And the disaster continues: by January 1, 2015, they had descended to 698, twenty-nine fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 66%.

And the decline does not stop. On January 1, 2016, only 673 remained. Twenty-five fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 67%.

On January 1, 2017, there were 643, twenty fewer than a year earlier. The reduction is now at 69%.

On January 1, 2018, only 605 remained, thirty-eight fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 71%. They are among the religious who have it hardest.

And the fall does not stop; on January 1, 2019, thirty-six more religious had disappeared; 569 remained. The loss now rises to 72%.

On January 1, 2020, thirty-four more religious had been left by the wayside: 535. They have already lost 74%.

On January 1, 2021, thirty-five religious disappeared; 500 remain. 76%

Missionaries of Our Lady of the Pillar: Founded by María Esperanza Vitales Otín in Lanaja (Huesca), 1939. In 1973 there were 247 and in 2013, 116. 53% of the institute disappeared. On January 1, 2014, there were 114, two fewer than the previous year. They are now at a 54% loss. By January 1, 2015, 111 remain, three fewer than the previous year. The loss is now at 55% of their members.

And that ruin no one stops. On January 1, 2016, barely 109 religious remained. Two fewer than a year earlier. They are now at a 57% decline.

On January 1, 2017, only 105 remained; in one year they lost four religious, their number already so small. The loss is at 58%.

On January 1, 2018, there were already 101, four fewer than a year earlier, so the loss is now at 60%.

On January 1, 2019, they maintain the same figures: 101 and 60%.

On January 1, 2025, still 89 and 64%.

Dominican Missionaries of the Rosary: Founded in Ocaña by the Dominicans of the Province of the Rosary in 1887. In 1973 there were 508 and forty years later, 594. Another congregation that grows in these years of almost general collapse. Now they decline. On January 1, 2014, there were 578, sixteen fewer than the previous year. But still more than in 1973. The last year was not unfavorable for them, as by January 1, 2015, there were 577, only one fewer than a year earlier.

On January 1, 2016, they had increased by one religious: 578. It seems the Dominicans of Ocaña are doing what they should.

2016 went worse, as on January 1, 2017, 569 remained, nine fewer than the previous year. But still quite a few more than in 1973.

On January 1, 2018, there were 555, fourteen fewer than those of a year earlier but still higher than those in 1973.

A year later, ten fewer: 545, but still surpassing those of 1973.

On January 1, 2020, they lost four religious: 541, but still without decline compared to 1973.

On January 1, 2021, twelve religious disappeared: 529.

It is very possible that this will die, but for now it remains alive.

On January 1, 2022, 508. The same as in 1973. Extraordinary.

On January 1, 2023, fourteen lost: 494. The loss is only 3%.

On January 1, 2024, seven more lost: 487. The loss is an excellent 5%.

On January 1, 2025, nineteen stayed on the way: 468. 8%.

Missionaries of the Divine Master: Founded in Baza by the future bishop Francisco Blanco Nájera in 1944. There were 391 in 1973 and 343 in 2013. They have only decreased by 13%. On January 1, 2014, there were 336, seven fewer than the previous year. They have lost 15%. But the decline intensifies, as by January 1, 2015, only 318 remained, eighteen fewer than a year earlier. The loss is now at 19%.

And they do not fare better. On January 1, 2016, there were only 296. Twenty-two fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 25%.

On January 1, 2017, they had increased four more than the previous year, to 300. The loss dropped to 24%.

On January 1, 2025, ten lost: 221. 44%

Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary: Founded in San Sebastián by María Teresa Dupouy Bordes in 1930. I do not find them in the Annuario. In 1991 there were 99. Yes, they are of pontifical right. In 1986 there were 108.

In the Annuario several congregations of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary appear, and specifically the Missionaries were 59 on January 1, 2023, and 55 on January 1, 2024.

On January 1, 2025, 53. Two fewer than the previous year. 51%.

Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament and Mary Immaculate: Founded by Emilia Riquelme y Zayas in Granada in 1896. In 1973 there were 217 and in 2013, 237. Another congregation that increases despite the enormous crisis. On January 1, there were 231, six fewer than the previous year. By January 1, 2015, 227 religious remained, still more than those of 1973 but approaching them.

And 2015 concluded favorably. With two more religious: 229. Still more than in 1973. It seems a miracle.

And the same can be said for January 1, 2017, although they dropped to 222, seven fewer than the previous year.

On January 1, 2018, they drop below the 1973 figure: 214, three religious, barely anything. They decrease by 2%. We will have to wait a bit longer to venture judgments, although mine, for now, are not at all optimistic.

On January 1, 2019, four religious lost: 210. 4%

On January 1, 2020, three more religious lost: 207. 5%

On January 1, 2021, ten religious lost: 197. 10%

On January 1, 2025, 177, eight fewer than a year earlier. 19%

Dominican Missionaries of the Rosary: Founded by Ramón Zubieta and Ascensión Nico in Lima in 1918. In 1973, 957; in 2013, 715. They lost 26%. On January 1, 2014, there were 718, three more than the previous year. The loss is at 25%. By January 1, 2015, 699 remained, nineteen fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 27%.

2015 was not good for them, as they lost twenty religious: 679. The decline is at 30%.

But they improved in 2016, as by January 1, 2017, there were 683, four more than the previous year. The loss drops to 29%.

Joy in the poor man’s house does not usually last. On January 1, 2018, there were already 666. Seventeen fewer than two years earlier. 31% loss.

On January 1, 2019, 653, thirteen fewer than a year earlier. The loss rises to 32%.

On January 1, 2020, 629, twenty-four fewer than a year earlier. 35% loss.

On January 1, 2021, three more than the previous year; 632. 34%

On January 1, 2022, seventeen lost: 615. 36%

On January 1, 2023, twenty-four left; 591. 39%

On January 1, 2024, fourteen lost: 577. 40%

On January 1, 2025, they are again 591, fourteen more than the previous year. 39%

Missionary Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary: Founded in 1862 in Lleida by Esperanza de Jesús González. In 1973 there were 111 and in 2013, 68. They have lost 39% of the members. On January 1, 2014, 65 religious remained, three fewer than the previous year. The loss is now at 42%. And by January 1, 2015, there were only 63, two fewer than a year earlier. The decline is at 44%.

They continue, on January 1, 2016, to be 63, so the loss remains at 44%, but given their small number the following years could be tragic.

On January 1, 2017, they had lost one religious; 62 remained. The reduction is now at 45%.

On January 1, 2018, they lost one more religious; 61 remain. Still at 45%, but fewer and older each time.

On January 1, 2019, two disappeared: 59. 47%

On January 1, 2020, they increase by one: 60. They lose 46%.

On January 1, 2025, there were 48, four fewer than a year earlier. 57%

Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth: Founded in Málaga by Bishop Manuel González in 1921. In 1973, 166; in 2013, 193. Another congregation that grows. On January 1, 2014, they had dropped to 188, five fewer than the previous year but still more than in 1973. By January 1, 2015, 180, eight fewer than a year earlier but still more than in 1973.

And on January 1, 2016, 175, still more than in 1973 although five fewer religious than the previous year.

On January 1, 2017, there were 167, eight fewer than a year earlier but still one more than in 1973.

On January 1, 2018, there were 165, two fewer than the previous year but practically the same as in 1973. That is a stake in Flanders. However, the declines of recent years introduce a point of concern.

On January 1, 2019, 165, one fewer than there were in 1973. The decline does not reach 1%.

Missionary Work of Jesus and Mary: Founded in Logroño by Pilar Izquierdo in 1947. In 1986, 179; in 2013, 228. Another congregation that grows. On January 1, 2014, there were only 51, four fewer than the previous year. 37% loss. On this occasion I did not find them in the Annuario. I do not say they are not there, but that I did not find them. Although given their number, all pessimism is possible.

They continue to exist. On January 1, 2016, 47 remained, four fewer than two years earlier. They are now at a 42% decline.

On January 1, 2017, there were 45, two fewer than a year earlier. The loss is at 44%.

On January 1, 2014, they had lost the one-thousand mark and were 996, but that does not make one forget the recent growth they have had. By January 1, 2015, they again surpass the one-thousand mark and are 1,002.

They hold up very well, and on January 1, 2016, they have lost only one religious: 1,001.

On January 1, 2017, although they lose thirteen religious: 988, they still have spectacular results.

On January 1, 2018, they continue to lose religious, twenty-one: 967. Still many more than they were.

On January 1, 2020, they continue to increase: three more religious: 974.

And the results get worse every time. On January 1, 2017, only 94 remained, nine religious lost in one year. The decline is at 34%.

On January 1, 2018, two more religious were lost. 92 elderly women remain. You tell me the future, although the decline is, for now, 36%. In the coming years it will increase enormously.

On January 1, 2019, five more lost: 87. Already 40% of the institute left. And compared to 1986, so the percentage will be considerably higher.

On January 1, 2020, 84 remained, three fewer than last year; 42%.

On January 1, 2021, there was one more religious: 85. 41%

On January 1, 2022, four fewer: 81. 44%

Thirty-six fewer than a year earlier. The decline is now at 66%.

They continue on the same line of accelerated decline. On January 1, 2016, there were only 1,016, twenty-seven fewer than a year earlier. The decline rises to 67%.

And thirty-five more who left on January 1, 2020: 862. They lose 72%.

On January 1, 2014, barely 592 remained, twenty-eight fewer than the previous year. They have already lost 82% and it seems nothing can stop that. And so it is; nothing can stop it. By January 1, 2015, there were only 584, eight fewer than a year earlier. 82% decline.

And on January 1, 2016, they had left fourteen more religious on the way. There were only 570. The decline is at 82%.

On January 1, 2017, 562, eight fewer than the previous year. The loss is at 82%.

They are at a 22% loss, which, given what is happening, is not a bad result. I am very glad, as they seem to me excellent religious.

Well, my joy is confirmed on January 1, 2016, although the increase is minimal—one religious—it is a positive datum. There are 276. Still at 22%.

On January 1, 2017, they grow again: 279, three more than the previous year. The loss improves to 21%.

On January 1, 2018, they lose one religious: 278. Still at a 21% decline. Very good results for what we are seeing.

Religious Reparatrix of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Of French foundation (1799); now they must be only in Spain, where they are dying and have the general curia. In 1973 there were 119 and by 2013 barely 52 remained. They have lost 57% of their members along the way. So on January 1, 2014, there are only 50, two fewer than the previous year. On January 1, 2017, they drop to 46, three fewer religious; the loss is now at 62%.

On January 1, 2018, only 42 remain, four religious lost in one year. The decline is at 65%, although that is now the least of it. We can anticipate the R.I.P.

Well, another miracle, and a big one: in 2018 they increase by 20 religious: 62. No one believes it unless they have absorbed some terminal congregation. The 65% decline would have reduced to 48%.

By January 1, 2015, only 1,653 remained, seventy-one fewer than a year earlier. The loss is at 62%.

Nor in the 2020 one.

Nor in the 2021 one.

Nor in the 2022 one.

Nor in the 2023 one.

Nor in the 2026 one.
