Carlos Ortiz, director of the CEU Schools Area, dies in the Urda train accident

The Catholic Association of Propagandists (ACdP) and CEU confirmed this Saturday the death of Carlos Ortiz Sanchidrían, director of the CEU Schools Area, in the train accident in Urda (Toledo) that occurred last Wednesday, October 28. Ortiz, a propagandist, was traveling to Seville for work reasons on one of the derailed trains, according to El Debate.

In a joint statement, both institutions expressed their condolences with words that open the text: “There are moments when words are insufficient.” They added that “Carlos was a very beloved person, dedicated to his educational vocation” and expressed their affection for his wife, Mónica, his family, and the educational community of Colegio CEU San Pablo Sanchinarro, which he directed.

The statement concludes with a reference to faith: “Our faith does not spare us from pain, but it allows us to live it with hope.” The ACdP and CEU also thanked “all the expressions of concern and affection received” in recent days and asked to join in prayer for the deceased.

A career dedicated to education

A graduate in Hispanic Philology, Ortiz began his career at CEU in 2008 as a teacher of Spanish Language, Latin, and Literature at Colegio CEU San Pablo Montepríncipe. In 2015 he became Director of Studies at Colegio CEU San Pablo Sanchinarro, and in 2019 he assumed the direction of that school, before taking charge of the CEU Schools Area.

He was also a member of the National Board of Directors of CECE and directed the Master’s in Teacher Training for Secondary Education and Baccalaureate at Universidad CEU San Pablo. El Debate describes him as a man of deep Christian faith and special devotion to the Virgin Mary, “kind, approachable, and tireless worker.”

The general director, injured in the same accident

In the same accident, Javier Tello, general director of CEU and also a propagandist, was injured. He was traveling on the same train and, according to El Debate, “is recovering favorably.”

The news of Ortiz’s death brings an end to several days of waiting for the CEU educational community, which had been closely following the condition of both directors since the accident.
