The Vatican confirms that Leo XIV will not need further treatments after his cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV will not require any additional treatment following the surgical procedure he underwent on October 13 to remove a lung tumor. The definitive histological examinations have confirmed that it was a localized lung adenocarcinoma, according to a statement released by the Holy See on Wednesday, October 21.

The news was communicated by Dr. Luigi Carbone, director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Governorate of Vatican City State, and Professor Stefano Margaritora, the surgeon who operated on the Pontiff at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome.

According to Vatican News, the specialists have received the definitive results of the tests performed on the tissue removed during the operation, which rule out the need for further oncological treatments.

Tests confirm the disease was localized

The Holy See Press Office published the following communiqué, signed by both physicians:

Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora communicate the following regarding the Pope’s postoperative progress:
