A priest of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis (Minnesota, United States) has described in his own words the experience he lived during the consecration of a Mass, after a video of him, visibly overwhelmed at that moment, went viral on social media. “I felt my hands fixed to the chalice of the Precious Blood and could not physically move it,” recounts Fr. Brent Bowman in a statement published on the archdiocese’s website.
On Monday, September 14, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Bowman was celebrating daily Mass at the parish of St. Gabriel the Archangel in Hopkins, before students and teachers of Chesterton Academy, the classical Catholic high school where he serves as chaplain.
“An interior knowledge of the power of those words”
According to his own account, while pronouncing the prayer of consecration over the wine he received “what I believe was an interior knowledge of the power of these words being spoken and the reality of their effect, to the point that it was difficult for me to speak.” With each word, he writes, he felt “more physically overwhelmed,” as can be seen in the recording of the Mass.
To that knowledge was added, he relates, “a sensory awareness of the weight of God’s power descending upon the altar,” and he felt “the heaviness of the substantial presence of Jesus in the chalice” he held in his hands. “The chalice became too heavy to hold, and I felt myself being drawn downward until it rested upon the altar. I felt my hands fixed to the chalice of the Precious Blood and could not physically move it,” he describes.
Bowman explains that, when trying to elevate the Precious Blood without being able to do so for a time, he believes he was granted “the grace to understand more deeply the bittersweet reality of the Lord’s Passion and how much blood Christ shed for the immense weight of all our sins.” “I believe I experienced that weight in the chalice,” he adds.
A particular grace, not a eucharistic miracle
The video spread quickly, and some users raised the possibility of a visible eucharistic miracle. Bowman clarifies in his statement that his experience “was not what the Catholic Church considers a eucharistic miracle”: the species of bread and wine retained their appearance and taste throughout the Mass. “I never saw real blood or human flesh with my eyes,” he states.
The pastor of St. Gabriel, Fr. Paul Haverstock, had already confirmed that same point in the homily the following day, after speaking with Bowman: God granted him, he said, “a particular grace,” not a visible transformation of the species.
Bowman, ordained a priest of the archdiocese in May 2024, emphasizes that such private spiritual experiences are “completely undeserved gifts and signs of God’s abundant love for all his people,” but “are not necessarily signs of holiness in any person.” “I pray that this brief testimony moves our hearts to contemplate more deeply the mysteries of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and the Precious Blood,” he concludes.
