Reading from the first letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians

1 Corinthians 5, 1-8

Dear brothers and sisters: It is commonly reported that there is among you a case of immorality so great that it does not even exist among the pagans, for one of you lives with his father’s wife.

And yet you go about boasting, when you should rather be in mourning and have expelled from among you the one who committed such an enormity. As for me, absent in body but present in spirit, I have already pronounced my sentence as if I were present, against the one who has done this.

Gather together, then, you –I will be present in spirit–, and in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with his power, hand that man over to Satan for the punishment of his body, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

Therefore it is not right that you go about boasting. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Throw out the old yeast, so that you may be a new batch, since you are unleavened bread, for Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

Let us therefore celebrate the feast of Passover, not with the old yeast, which is of vice and wickedness, but with unleavened bread, which is of sincerity and truth.

Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Luke

Luke 6, 6-11

One Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and began to teach. There was a man there who had a paralyzed right hand. The scribes and Pharisees were watching Jesus to see if he would heal on the Sabbath and thus have something to accuse him of.

But Jesus, knowing their intentions, said to the man with the paralyzed hand: «Get up and stand here in the middle.» The man got up and stood in the middle. Then Jesus said to them: «I am going to ask you a question: What is it permitted to do on the Sabbath: good or evil, to save a life or to end it?» And after looking around at all those present, he said to the man: «Stretch out your hand.» He stretched it out and was healed.

The scribes and Pharisees became furious and discussed among themselves what they were going to do to Jesus.
