Reading from the first letter of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians

1 Corinthians 3, 18-23

Brothers and sisters: Let no one deceive himself: if anyone considers himself wise according to the standards of this world, let him become ignorant in order to become truly wise. For the wisdom of this world is ignorance before God, as Scripture says: God makes the wise fall into the trap of their own cunning. It also says: The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise and considers them futile.

Therefore, let no one boast of belonging to any man, since everything belongs to you: Paul, Apollos and Peter, the world, life and death, the present and the future: everything is yours; you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke

Luke 5, 1-11

At that time, Jesus was standing by the shore of the Lake of Gennesaret, and the people were crowding around him to hear the word of God. Jesus saw two boats at the water’s edge. The fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Jesus got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then, sitting in the boat, he taught the crowd.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon: «Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.» Simon replied: «Master, we have worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the nets.» They did so, and caught such a great number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full that they were about to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said: «Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!» For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch they had made. The same was true of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon: «Do not be afraid; from now on you will be a fisher of men.» So they brought their boats to land, left everything, and followed him.
