Reading from the first letter of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians

1 Corinthians 3, 1-9

Brothers and sisters: Previously I could not speak to you as people moved by the Holy Spirit, but as individuals subject to their passions. As Christians who were still children, I gave you milk and not solid food, because you could not bear it then. But even now you cannot bear it, for your passions still dominate you. For while there is envy and discord among you, is it not true that you remain subject to your passions and living on an exclusively human level?

When one says: “I belong to Paul,” “I belong to Apollos,” are you not acting in a merely human way? In reality, who is Apollos and who is Paul? We are only servants, through whom you came to faith, and each of us did what the Lord entrusted to him. I planted, Apollos watered, but it was God who made it grow. Therefore neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is of any importance, but only God, who makes it grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work for the same purpose, although each will receive wages according to his own labor. So then, we are God’s co-workers and you are God’s field, the house that God builds.

Reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke

Luke 4, 38-44

At that time, Jesus left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to do something for her. Jesus stood by her, commanded the fever with authority, and the fever left her. She got up at once and began to serve them.

At sunset, all who had sick people brought them to Jesus, and he, laying his hands on each one, healed them of their diseases. Demons also came out of many of them, shouting: “You are the Son of God!” But he sternly ordered them to be silent, because they knew he was the Messiah.

The next day he went to a lonely place, and the people went looking for him. When they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving them; but he said to them: “I must also proclaim the Kingdom of God to the other towns, for that is why I was sent.” And he went to preach in the synagogues of Judea.
