Pope Leo XIV has expressed his «spiritual solidarity and closeness» to those affected by the earthquake that struck the region of East Nusa Tenggara, in Indonesia, with special attention to the numerous displaced persons and injured. The Pontiff has also encouraged the ecclesiastical and civil authorities working in humanitarian assistance and has commended the deceased to God.
The message was transmitted on August 17 via a telegram signed by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and addressed to Monsignor Paulus Budi Kleden, SVD, Metropolitan Archbishop of Ende. Leo XIV also prays for the emergency personnel participating in the recovery efforts.
