Pope Leo XIV has dedicated his prayer intention for the month of August to evangelization in cities, inviting people to pray that urban communities may be “open and welcoming homes,” places “where no one feels invisible” and where “the joy of the Gospel may illuminate the hidden lives of so many brothers and sisters.”
The prayer intention, released on July 31 by the Worldwide Prayer Network of the Pope, in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication, focuses on life in large cities and the Church’s evangelizing mission in those settings.
“Make us your witnesses in the city, courageous and creative missionaries who proclaim with their lives your love, capable of overcoming haste, noise, and anonymity,” the Pontiff states in the video accompanying the initiative.
Cities, between opportunities and isolation
In his message, Leo XIV notes that cities offer spaces of freedom and opportunities, but warns that they can also become places marked by anonymity and loneliness.
“We know that cities are called to be places of freedom and opportunities, but they can also turn into spaces of anonymity and isolation. That is why today we ask you for a new outlook, capable of discovering in urban life fertile ground for proclaiming your Gospel,” the Pope expresses.
The intention refers to large metropolitan areas, where social and economic challenges coexist with situations of isolation and lack of community ties.

Leo XIV asks that Christian communities be “open and welcoming homes,” where hope is shared and “no one feels invisible.”
The prayer intention adds that Christian communities are called to proclaim the Gospel also in those areas where haste, noise, and anonymity predominate.
Loneliness in large cities
The Worldwide Prayer Network of the Pope accompanies the August intention with a note pointing out that loneliness especially affects young people. According to data cited by the institution, 35% acknowledge that this reality influences their daily lives, despite permanent digital connectivity.
The international director of the Worldwide Prayer Network of the Pope, Jesuit Cristóbal Fones, states that this month’s intention invites reflection on how to build “more just and welcoming” cities through inner transformation born of prayer and the action of the Holy Spirit.
