The Diocese of Cádiz and Ceuta has issued a statement expressing its concern over the situation the autonomous city is experiencing these days following the massive arrival of immigrants from Morocco and announcing a series of support measures to address the emergency.
In the note, the diocese states that it follows «with deep concern the gravity of the events» and refers to «the special vulnerability of so many people affected by this reality.»
Likewise, the diocesan Church expresses its willingness to collaborate with civil institutions and competent bodies, making available «the human and material resources» at its disposal to help meet any needs that may arise, always «through coordination and respect for the competencies of each administration.»
The main measure announced is the allocation of this weekend’s collections in the parishes of Ceuta. According to the statement, the entire amount collected will be given to the Diocesan Delegation for Migration, which will channel the aid through the San Antonio Migrant Care Center, from where the most urgent needs will be addressed in coordination with the competent services.
The diocese concludes by thanking the generosity of the faithful and all those who collaborate with this initiative and invites Christian communities to intensify prayer «for those who suffer, for those responsible for managing this situation, and for all those who work to build paths of peace, justice, and hope.»
During Thursday’s events, thousands of immigrants crossed the border irregularly from Morocco, overwhelming the response capacity of emergency services and the Temporary Stay Center for Immigrants (CETI). In light of this situation, the president of the autonomous city, Juan Jesús Vivas, has requested that the Government declare a national emergency and assume unified command to address the crisis.
