Pope Leo XIV continues to take advantage of his summer stay in Castel Gandolfo to visit some of the main shrines and monasteries in central Italy. Two days after traveling to the historic Benedictine abbey of Montecassino, the Pontiff made another private outing this Wednesday to the Santuario de la Santísima Trinidad de Vallepietra, located in the Lazio region, very close to the border with Abruzzo.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pope spent a few moments in prayer before the ancient fresco of the Holy Trinity venerated in the shrine and later greeted the faithful and religious present.
A centuries-old shrine in the mountains
The Santuario de la Santísima Trinidad de Vallepietra is situated at nearly 1,400 meters above sea level, nestled on the slope of Mount Tagliata. This pilgrimage site, one of the best known in central Italy, welcomes thousands of faithful each year, drawn by devotion to the ancient Trinity fresco and by the unique location of the church, built beside a sheer cliff.
A summer marked by visits to places of spirituality
The visit adds to the one made last Monday to the abbey of Montecassino, where Pope Leo XIV prayed before the tomb of Saint Benedict, patron of Europe. These private outings during his summer rest reflect the Pontiff’s interest in approaching some of Italy’s main centers of spirituality while staying in Castel Gandolfo.
