Barron interviews J. D. Vance about faith, politics, and his return to the Catholic Church

U.S. Bishop Robert Barron has interviewed the Vice President of the United States, J. D. Vance, for an upcoming edition of his program Bishop Barron Presents. The announcement was made by the prelate himself through a video posted on his social media, in which he previewed some of the topics discussed during the conversation, although without specifying the date on which it will be broadcast.

A conversation about faith in public life

According to Barron, the interview is based on Vance’s new book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith (“Communion: How I Found My Way Back to Faith”), but it also covers issues related to politics, the economy, culture, and religion.

The bishop noted that one of the central themes of the dialogue is the vice president’s spiritual journey, which he described as an “Augustinian arc”: the story of a young man from humble origins who, driven by great ambition, reaches the highest public offices and at the same time discovers his need for God.

Barron also explained that they reflected on the spiritual roots of the United States and on the progressive distancing from religion in broad sectors of society, a phenomenon that, in his view, also poses a challenge for the country’s political life.

The conversation likewise included references to historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as an exchange on how Vance seeks to live out his Catholic faith in the exercise of the vice presidency.

The vice president’s prayer life

One of the most personal aspects of the interview was the vice president’s spiritual life.

Barron revealed that they discussed his daily prayer and the challenges of maintaining an interior life amid political responsibilities. According to him, Vance even asked for recommendations on how to deepen his relationship with God.

“It was a wonderful and very rich conversation,” the bishop stated when presenting the upcoming broadcast.

The book that serves as the starting point

The interview takes as its reference Communion, the book in which Vance reconstructs the path that led him to the Catholic Church.

In its pages, the vice president recounts his evolution from a childhood marked by evangelical Protestantism to his reception into the Church in 2019, after a period in which he came to define himself as an atheist. The work also includes his reflections on the influence of faith on issues such as family, political responsibility, and the role of religion in public life.

Awaiting its publication

Although Barron did not announce when the interview will air, the preview allows us to anticipate a conversation focused on the spiritual dimension of one of the most relevant political leaders in the United States today and on the influence that the Catholic faith exerts on his way of understanding public life and the exercise of his institutional responsibilities.
