First reading

Reading from the prophecy of Zechariah

Zechariah 9, 9-10

This is what the Lord says:
«Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion;
shout for joy, daughter of Jerusalem;
look, your king is coming to you,
righteous and victorious,
humble and riding on a donkey.

He will remove the chariots of war from the land of Ephraim,
and the war horses from Jerusalem.
He will break the warrior’s bow
and proclaim peace to the nations.
His dominion will extend from sea to sea
and from the great river to the ends of the earth».

Romans 8, 9. 11-13

Brothers and sisters: You do not live according to the selfish disorder of man, but according to the Spirit, since the Spirit of God truly dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ. If the Spirit of the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in you, then the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead, will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not subject to the selfish disorder of man, to make that disorder our rule of conduct. For if you live that way, you will certainly be destroyed. On the contrary, if with the help of the Spirit you put to death your evil deeds, then you will live.

Gospel

Reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew

Matthew 11, 25-30

At that time, Jesus exclaimed: «I give you thanks, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and have revealed them to the simple. Thanks, Father, because this is how it has seemed good to you.

The Father has placed all things in my hands. No one knows the Son except the Father; no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light».
