Arguineguín Port hosted an institutional event on Wednesday where a commemorative plaque was unveiled to remember Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Canary Islands, the first made by a Pontiff to the archipelago. The inscription also identifies this site with the name “Port of Hope”.
The tribute, organized by the Diocese of the Canary Islands, was attended by the Bishop of the Canary Islands, Mons. José Mazuelos; the Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno; the Director of Puertos Canarios, José Gilberto Moreno; as well as institutional representatives, civil and ecclesiastical authorities, members of the port community, and local residents.
Unveiling of the commemorative plaque
The central moment of the event was the unveiling of the plaque installed at the port, intended to record Pope Leo XIV’s visit and the significance this location held during his stay in the Canary Islands.
The plaque also bears the name “Port of Hope”, a designation linked to the message the Pontiff delivered during his meeting with migrants in Arguineguín.
Address by the Bishop of the Canary Islands
During the ceremony, Mons. José Mazuelos recalled the message of fraternity, welcome, and hope conveyed by Leo XIV during his visit and noted that the event continues to hold relevance for the diocese and for Canarian society.
The day also included the theatrical performance Historias de Sal, inspired by the migratory reality of the port and the meaning this place acquired during the papal visit.
Recognitions during the event
As part of the tribute, the Mayor of Mogán was presented with a commemorative medal and the municipal book of honors signed by the Holy Father.
Likewise, the local parish priest received a rosary intended for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and the Director of Puertos Canarios was recognized for his collaboration in organizing Pope Leo XIV’s visit.
With this event, the Diocese of the Canary Islands and the participating institutions have sought to permanently commemorate the Pontiff’s passage through Arguineguín by means of a commemorative element installed at the port.
