Fernández, Ryś, Brislin and Grech will introduce the major debates of the consistory convened by Leo XIV

The Holy See has made public the official calendar of the extraordinary consistory convened by Leo XIV for June 26 and 27 —the same one that was announced a few days ago by Messa in Latino, a meeting in which the cardinals will address issues related to evangelization, the international situation, peace, the common good, and the implementation of the synodal process. The program released by the Vatican Press Office also reveals which cardinals will be in charge of introducing each of the major working blocks.

The chosen ones are Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś, Archbishop of Kraków; Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith; Cardinal Stephen Brislin, Archbishop of Johannesburg; and Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops.

A reflection on the world in which the Church proclaims the Gospel

The work will begin on the morning of Friday, June 26, with a Mass presided over by Leo XIV in St. Peter’s Basilica. Afterward, following the greeting of the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, and the Pope’s introductory remarks, the first working session will take place.

Under the title «In what world are we called to proclaim the Gospel?», Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś will offer a biblical meditation that will serve as the starting point for the cardinals’ reflection.

The participants will then discuss the main tensions, sufferings, and questions currently affecting peoples and local Churches, as well as the signs of hope, fidelity to the Gospel, and reconciliation that they consider important to share with the rest of the College of Cardinals.

Fernández will open the debate on «the culture of power and the civilization of love»

The Friday afternoon session will be devoted to the theme «The culture of power and the civilization of love».

The introduction will be given by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, who will base his remarks on chapter five of the encyclical Magnifica humanitas (nos. 182-192), published by Leo XIV at the beginning of his pontificate.

The working groups will subsequently reflect on the impact that international tensions, divisions, and conflicts have on the life of the Churches and peoples, as well as on the languages, attitudes, and practices that can foster reconciliation, coexistence, and peace.

After the sharing of conclusions, the cardinals will be free to speak on the topic.

Brislin will present the reflection on the common good

The morning of Saturday, June 27, will focus on the theme «Building for the good: the challenges of our time».

The person in charge of introducing this third session will be Cardinal Stephen Brislin, who will draw on the introduction and conclusion of Magnifica humanitas to frame the reflection.

The cardinals will analyze the fractures that currently hinder the building of the common good in their respective contexts, the demands and expectations they perceive in the societies they serve, and the possible initiatives that both local Churches and the universal Church could promote to respond to those challenges.

Grech will introduce the session on the implementation of the Synod

The final session of the consistory will be devoted to the path of implementing the Synod.

Cardinal Mario Grech will present the document Toward the Synodal Assemblies 2027-2028. Stages, criteria, and instruments for preparation, which will serve as the basis for the subsequent debate.

After a round of questions, the cardinals will engage in a direct dialogue with Leo XIV through free interventions of a maximum of three minutes per participant.

The day will conclude with a final address by the Pontiff, the singing of the Te Deum, and a dinner with all the participating cardinals.

Closing on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul

The consistory will culminate on Monday, June 29, with the celebration of the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Leo XIV will preside over the Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, during which the pallium will be conferred on the metropolitan archbishops appointed during the past year.
