The city of Granada once again received the blessing with the Most Holy Sacrament from the viewpoint of the Abbey of Sacromonte on the final day of the Octave of Corpus Christi. The celebration brought together numerous faithful in one of the most emblematic places in Granadan Christian history, from where the eucharistic blessing was imparted over the city and its metropolitan area.

According to the Archdiocese of Granada, the day began with the celebration of a votive Mass at the Abbey of Sacromonte, presided over by Canon David Cuerva and concelebrated by the abbot and the members of the Sacromonte chapter.

A tradition linked to eucharistic devotion

The celebration concluded with the exposition of the Most Holy Sacrament and the blessing of Granada from the viewpoint of the Abbey, an initiative that in recent years has drawn an increasing number of faithful.

From this vantage point, located opposite the historic ensemble of the city, the attendees took part in a moment of prayer and eucharistic adoration with views of the Cathedral, the Alhambra, and much of the Granadan plain.

According to David Cuerva, on this occasion faithful from nearby dioceses also attended, drawn by a celebration that unites eucharistic devotion with one of the most representative places of the Church in Granada.

Sacromonte and the Christian history of Granada

During the homily, the canon recalled the deep connection of Sacromonte with the religious history of Granada and evoked some of the figures who have marked the spiritual life of the city over the centuries, such as Saint John of God, Saint John of Ávila, Saint John of the Cross, and Archbishop Pedro de Castro, promoter of the Abbey of Sacromonte. He also recalled Granada’s deep-rooted eucharistic tradition, a city where the celebration of Corpus Christi continues to hold a prominent place in religious and cultural life.

“The hope of Granada resides completely in God’s blessing”

In his preaching, David Cuerva stated that many of the principles guiding today’s society no longer have Christian inspiration, yet he emphasized that the city’s hope continues to be found in God.

“The hope of Granada resides completely in God’s blessing: He continues to love us, He continues to desire our good,” he noted during the celebration.

The priest especially entrusted the inhabitants of Granada and all men and women of good will to God, from a place that preserves the relics of Saint Cecilius, patron of the city, and that constitutes one of the main historical landmarks of Granadan Christianity.

The day concluded with the eucharistic blessing imparted from the viewpoint of the Abbey, bringing to an end the events held at Sacromonte on the occasion of the Octave of Corpus Christi.
