Day 3: Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Preparatory Prayer

Eternal Father, unoriginated source of all life and all love, who in the fullness of time gave us your only-begotten Son so that the world might have life through Him, grant us during these days to penetrate the ineffable mystery of His Sacred Heart.

Holy Spirit, subsistent Love of the Father and the Son, divine fire who searches the depths of God, open the eyes of our soul so that we may contemplate the unfathomable riches enclosed in the Heart of Jesus Christ. Lead us to that source from which grace, mercy, forgiveness, and life flow. Bring us not only to the knowledge, but to the intimacy of that blessed Heart; not only to its contemplation, but to its friendship; not only to its admiration, but to its love. Introduce us into the burning sanctuary of the Heart of Jesus, so that we may learn to live, to suffer, to hope, and to love with Him.

Amen.

Prayer to the Compassionate Heart of Christ

Sacred Heart of Jesus, today I wish to contemplate You walking the roads of Galilee and Judea, drawing near to people with the simplicity of one who comes to serve and not to be served. As I meditate on the years of Your public life, I discover that there is one word that admirably sums up Your passage through this world: compassion. Everything seems to find an echo in Your Heart. No tear is foreign to You, no wound leaves You indifferent, no human misery encounters the barrier of Your rejection.

You are moved by the widow of Nain who walks behind the coffin of her only son. You are moved by the leper who, overcoming fear and shame, kneels before You begging to be cleansed. You are moved by the hungry crowd that follows You along the roads, even forgetting to eat. You are moved by the weeping of Martha and Mary beside the tomb of Lazarus. You are moved by the disciples’ confusion, Peter’s weakness, Zacchaeus’ loneliness, the shame of the sinful woman, and the anguish of so many men and women who find in Your gaze something they had never found anywhere else: the certainty of being loved.

Heart of my Jesus, how different Your compassion is from mine: I approach suffering as a spectator; You enter into it as Savior. I observe wounds; You make them Your own. I feel pity for a moment; You love to the end. Your compassion does not consist merely in feeling the pain of others, but in taking it upon Your shoulders and carrying it to the Cross to redeem it. That is why the poor approached You without fear; sinners found the courage to stand up; the sick and the forgotten experienced a new dignity beside You. In Your Heart they discovered that God is not a distant judge watching from on high, but a Father close at hand who knows the weariness, the tears, the loneliness, and the suffering of His children.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, as I contemplate You I feel ashamed of the hardness that so often dwells in my soul. I live surrounded by people whose struggles I do not know, whose sufferings I ignore, and whose wounds I barely perceive. Often I pass by another’s pain without stopping; I listen without understanding, I look without seeing, and I judge without having loved enough. Therefore today I ask You to transform my heart into the image of Yours.

Teach me to look as You looked. Give me eyes capable of discovering the sadness hidden behind a smile, the weariness concealed beneath a serene appearance, and the need for affection so often disguised beneath difficult or harsh attitudes. Free me from the indifference that chills the soul and from that subtle selfishness that leads me to be too preoccupied with myself.

Make me learn from You the delicacy with which You treated the weak, the patience with which You bore the limitations of Your own, the tenderness with which You welcomed those whom everyone rejected, and the mercy with which You lifted up those who had fallen. May I never grow accustomed to the suffering of my brothers and sisters nor consider normal the sadness of those around me. May I know how to stop, to listen, to accompany, and to console.

And when I myself pass through the night of trial, when illness, disappointment, loneliness, or failure visit me, make me remember that there exists a Heart that knows from within all human sorrows because He has carried them upon Himself. A Heart that does not contemplate my tears from afar, but gathers them one by one. A Heart that never tires of hoping, of forgiving, and of loving.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, inexhaustible source of mercy, make me always find refuge in You. May I never doubt Your love when my strength fails, nor Your nearness when everything seems dark. And since You have willed to reveal to the world the immense tenderness of God through Your most holy Humanity, allow my life to reflect, even from afar, something of the goodness, compassion, and mercy that burn eternally in Your blessed Heart.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You!

Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Immaculate Heart of Mary, masterpiece of the Holy Spirit and purest reflection of the Heart of Your Son, lead us to Jesus.

You who kept all His words in your heart, teach us to listen to Him. You who remained beside the Cross when many fled, teach us to remain faithful. You who knew as no one else the joys, the silences, the sufferings, and the secrets of the Heart of Christ, introduce us into His intimacy.

During this novena may we learn to love Him with something of your purity, to serve Him with something of your humility, to follow Him with something of your fidelity. And when our earthly pilgrimage ends, lead us to that open Heart which will forever be our homeland, our rest, and our beatitude.

Amen.
