Day 2: Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Preparatory Prayer

Eternal Father, source without source of all life and all love, who in the fullness of time gave us your only-begotten Son so that the world might have life through Him, grant us during these days to penetrate the ineffable mystery of His Sacred Heart.

Holy Spirit, subsistent Love of the Father and the Son, divine fire who searches the depths of God, open the eyes of our soul so that we may contemplate the unfathomable riches enclosed in the Heart of Jesus Christ. Lead us to that source from which grace, mercy, forgiveness, and life flow. Bring us not only to the knowledge, but to the intimacy of that blessed Heart; not only to its contemplation, but to its friendship; not only to its admiration, but to its love. Introduce us into the burning sanctuary of the Heart of Jesus, so that we may learn to live, to suffer, to hope, and to love with Him.

Amen.

Prayer to the Hidden Heart of Nazareth

Sacred Heart of Jesus, today I wish to seek You far from the roads of Galilee, far from the crowds that followed You, far from the acclamations of Palm Sunday and far also from the darkness of Calvary: I want to find You in Nazareth; I want to draw near to those silent years that the Gospel barely mentions and which, nevertheless, occupy the greater part of Your earthly life. Thirty years of hiddenness, of ordinary life. Thirty years during which the Redeemer of the world seemed to do nothing extraordinary. And yet, there the salvation of the world was growing; there beat the Heart that one day would move sinners, sustain martyrs, console the afflicted, and attract saints; there I learn that the love of God is manifested more in the humble fidelity of each day than in great events.

I contemplate You, Lord, walking through the narrow streets of that small village. I see You bent over the workbench. I imagine You grasping the craftsman’s tools and I see You returning home when evening falls. And while the world ignores Your presence, the heavens marvel at the most beautiful spectacle in history: God living an ordinary human life.

How many times have I desired extraordinary events to feel You closer, thinking that holiness consists in doing great, visible, or admirable things. Today Your Heart answers me from Nazareth: it teaches me that true love grows in silence, that roots work hidden beneath the earth, that stars make no noise, that wheat ripens slowly, that saints often appear to be ordinary people.

Heart of Jesus, hidden for thirty years, heal in me the disease of haste, this constant need for immediate results, this impatience that so often robs me of peace. Teach me to understand that dark hours have meaning, that repeated days are fruitful, and that humble works can be eternal when done out of love.

How the modern person fears silence: running from one noise to another, filling life with images, news, conversations, and distractions; afraid to be alone with oneself because perhaps then You would be heard. But Your Heart chose silence: Nazareth was a school of silence, of obedience, of work, of hidden love. And there You were, growing in wisdom, age, and grace before God and before men.

I would like to enter that blessed house today, to sit humbly in a corner, to listen to the sound of tools, to contemplate the lamp lit as night falls, to see Mary gathered in prayer and Joseph working with strong hands and a clean heart. And to contemplate You, Heart of my Jesus, living “the terrible everyday.”

Make me discover the beauty of small things and learn to sanctify the duties of each day. May I never despise humble tasks. May I not continually seek to be seen, understood, or recognized: may Your gaze be enough for me. If Nazareth was enough for You for thirty years, it can also be enough for me.

Jesus, hidden and silent, make my heart like Yours. And when the hour of trials, contradictions, or apparent barrenness of my life comes, remind me of those fruitful years of Nazareth, of which barely a line remained in the Gospel. Heart of my Jesus, teach me the heroism of hidden fidelity, the holiness of the ordinary, the secret of Nazareth.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You!

Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Immaculate Heart of Mary, masterpiece of the Holy Spirit and purest reflection of the Heart of Your Son, lead us to Jesus.

You who kept all His words in your heart, teach us to listen to Him. You who remained beside the Cross when many fled, teach us to remain faithful. You who knew as no one else the joys, the silences, the sufferings, and the secrets of the Heart of Christ, introduce us into His intimacy.

May we, during this novena, learn to love Him with something of your purity, to serve Him with something of your humility, to follow Him with something of your fidelity. And when our earthly pilgrimage ends, lead us to that open Heart which will forever be our homeland, our rest, and our beatitude.

Amen.
