More than 200 people took part on Saturday in a so-called “queer” celebration held during the major gathering of German Catholics in the city of Würzburg, in a ceremony marked by demands for sexual diversity, blessings for same-sex couples, and recognition of gender identities.
According to Katholisch.de, the event took place in the Augustinian church and drew so many attendees that lines formed at the temple doors, as also happened at other events of the ecclesial gathering.
The organizers stated at the beginning of the ceremony that this type of celebration “used to take place on the margins,” but that it now forms part of the center of German ecclesial life.
LGBT Demands Within the Church
The celebration was held under the motto “Life is colorful: diversity in the Church?” and was organized by several groups linked to LGBT activism within the German Catholic sphere.
Among the organizers were the initiative #OutInChurch, the Augustinian monastery of Würzburg, German Catholic youth associations, and various groups of homosexual Christians.
During the ceremony, attendees exchanged messages of mutual support and blessing, while various interventions called for the “unconditional” recognition of human dignity “regardless of sex, sexual orientation, or lifestyle.”
Germany and the “Synodal Path”
The major gathering of German Catholics has become in recent years one of the main showcases of the so-called “synodal path” promoted by part of the German episcopate and laity.
In these meetings, events focused on ecclesial reforms, changes in sexual morality, and proposals to adapt the Church to contemporary cultural currents are frequent.
The holding of this “queer” event at the heart of the gathering reflects the growing normalization of such initiatives within the Church in Germany.
