Mexico: The bishop of Teotihuacán calls to “return to Jesus Christ” after the shooting in the archaeological zone

An armed man opened fire on Monday, April 20, in the Teotihuacán archaeological zone, in the State of Mexico, causing the death of a Canadian tourist and injuring thirteen people before taking his own life. Following the incident, the Bishop of Teotihuacán has called to recover Christian values and to turn our gaze to Jesus Christ.

An attack in one of the main tourist enclaves

The shooting occurred around noon in the archaeological site, one of the most visited in Mexico. According to the Security Cabinet, after the report of detonations, an operation was deployed with state forces and the National Guard.

According to preliminary information, the aggressor shot at the visitors and subsequently committed suicide. At the scene, a firearm, a bladed weapon, and useful cartridges were secured.

The attack left one fatality of Canadian nationality and thirteen injured, including two minors. Most of the affected are foreigners and several remain hospitalized.

A call after the tragedy

In the face of these events, the Bishop of Teotihuacán, Mons. Guillermo Francisco Escobar Galicia, expressed his “deep sadness and concern” in a statement released on the same day.

“We lament that this happens, as a consequence of the loss of the sense of life and stopping seeing the other as a brother,” stated the prelate.

Prayer for the victims and conversion of the aggressors

The bishop asked the faithful to raise prayers for those who have lost their lives and for the injured, as well as for those who stray from God’s path.

“As bishop of this diocese, I call on the entire faithful to raise our prayers for those who have lost their lives, as well as for all people who are erring their path, so that they deeply find reconciliation with God and with others,” he stated.

The message places violence in a deeper crisis, linked to the loss of the sense of life and fraternity.

“We need to turn our gaze to Jesus Christ”

At the center of his statement, the prelate insisted on the need to recover the Christian foundation in personal and family life.

“Today more than ever, we need to turn our gaze to Jesus Christ, way, truth, and life, to regain Christian values in families,” he affirmed.

Consolation and hope amid the pain

The statement concludes with an invocation to the Virgin Mary, to whom the bishop entrusts the victims and their families.

“May the Most Holy Mary accompany and console the pain of those who suffer the loss of a loved one and those who have gone through this bitter experience,” he expressed.
