Jaén prepares for the beatification of 124 martyrs of the Civil War

The Diocese of Jaén is experiencing days of special spiritual intensity ahead of the beatification of 124 martyrs from the Spanish Civil War, men and women who gave their lives for remaining faithful to Christ in times of persecution. The celebration, which will take place on Saturday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m. in the Cathedral, will be presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

A vigil to prepare the heart

As a prelude to the great event, the diocese has experienced a triduum of prayer during this week and has called for a Prayer Vigil in the Cathedral this Friday. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include moments of remembrance of the testimony of some of the martyrs. The choir Face to God will be in charge of the musical accompaniment.

The intention of the diocese is that the faithful live this time as an authentic preparation. As the Church of Jaén itself recalls, these 124 martyrs gave their lives “for love of Christ”, and their example continues to encourage the faith of the entire community today.

The meaning of this beatification for Jaén

The Pastoral Letter of the Bishop of Jaén —published on the occasion of this event and which delves into the life and legacy of the new blesseds— emphasizes that these men and women are part of the “great cloud of witnesses” that, over the centuries, have sustained the Church with their fidelity. It is recalled there that many of them died forgiving those who took their lives, manifesting a hope founded solely in Christ.

Bishop Sebastián Chico Martínez defines this beatification as a providential sign in the full Year of Jubilee of Hope. The blood of these Christians, he points out, “has become a fruitful seed”, and their testimony is a call to renew the faith in a time that still needs firm, serene Christians capable of forgiving.

A celebration of faith and gratitude

The central act will be the Saturday Eucharist in the Holy Church Cathedral of Jaén. During the celebration, the Church will officially recognize the martyrdom of these 124 faithful killed in odium fidei and authorize their public veneration. With this step, their absolute surrender to Christ in a period marked by religious persecution will be confirmed.

For the Diocese of Jaén, it is not just a historical recognition, but a spiritual impulse. The memory of these martyrs—priests, consecrated persons, and laity—is an invitation to live the faith with greater depth and clarity, without lukewarmness and with the serenity of those who know in whom they have placed their hope.
