The Diocese of Tombura-Yambio has denounced the violent clashes that have occurred since September 26 in Nagero County, in Western Equatoria, which have left wounded, displaced, and missing people, in addition to destroyed homes, health centers, schools, and infrastructure.
The bishop’s appeal
Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala raised his voice to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities. “Cease the hostilities! Respect human life! Protect civilians!”, he declared in a message disseminated by the diocese and reported by Fides Agency. The prelate emphasized that violence only worsens wounds and dishonors the dignity of the people.
Civilians in flight
Local witnesses reported that the population panicked and took refuge in the jungle after the gunfire. Many remain there, without food or medicine, exposed to rain and diseases. Elderly people, women, children, and the disabled are in especially critical conditions.
The Church’s response
“As your bishop, I want you to know that we have not forgotten you. The Church is with you, I am with you, and Christ himself walks with you in this valley of tears,” Mons. Hiiboro assured the Catholic communities in the county.
The bishop requested help from Caritas South Sudan, the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CODEP), and other humanitarian organizations, asking for food, medicines, clothing, and shelter for the displaced.
“One family in Christ”
In his final message, Mons. Hiiboro encouraged the faithful: “Your suffering is not invisible. The Church carries you in its heart. Although scattered and wounded, remember that you remain one family in Christ.”
