The Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) has appointed Mª Carmen Ramírez Moreno as the new director of its Information Office. The journalist, who has served as deputy director since 2023, becomes the first woman to assume leadership of this department.

According to information released this Thursday by the Spanish Episcopal Conference following the meeting of its Permanent Commission, held on September 29 and 30 in Madrid, the appointment was approved at the proposal of the CEE’s secretary general.

Ramírez, a laywoman from the Archdiocese of Madrid, replaces Father José Gabriel Vera Beorlegui, from the Archdiocese of Pamplona and Tudela, who had held the position since January 2015 and is now returning to his diocese.

Three decades linked to the Information Office

The new director has a long professional career within the Episcopal Conference. She has worked at the institution for around three decades, always connected to the Information Office.

In 2023 she was appointed deputy director of the department, a responsibility she held until her designation as director.

The appointment was presented this Thursday by Msgr. César García Magán, auxiliary bishop of Toledo and secretary general and spokesperson of the CEE, during the press conference following the Permanent Commission meeting.

García Magán highlighted Ramírez’s professionalism and noted that her selection had the unanimous support of the bishops who make up the Permanent Commission.

Succession of José Gabriel Vera

Ramírez succeeds Father José Gabriel Vera Beorlegui, who has remained at the head of the Spanish Episcopal Conference’s Information Office for more than eleven years.

Vera assumed the directorship in January 2015 and is now leaving the CEE headquarters to return to the Archdiocese of Pamplona and Tudela.

The succession places at the head of the Information Office a professional who was already part of its structure and who, since 2023, had served as deputy director.
