Reading from the first letter of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians

1 Corinthians 9, 16-19. 22-27

Brothers and sisters: I have no reason to boast about preaching the Gospel, since that is my obligation. Woe to me if I do not proclaim the Gospel! If I did it of my own initiative, I would deserve a reward; but if not, it means that a mission has been entrusted to me. Then, what is my reward? It consists in preaching the Gospel free of charge, renouncing the right I have to live from preaching.

Although I am not subject to anyone, I have become a slave to all in order to win them all. With the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, in order to win them all. I do everything for the Gospel, so that I too may share in its blessings.

Do you not know that in the stadium all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. Moreover, all athletes deny themselves many things: they do it for a prize that comes to an end; we, however, for one that lasts forever.

Therefore, I run, but not aimlessly, and I fight, but not beating the air; rather, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others, I myself may not be disqualified.

Luke 6, 39-42

At that time, Jesus proposed this example to his disciples: “Can a blind person guide another blind person? Will they not both fall into a pit? The disciple is not above the teacher; but when fully trained, will be like the teacher.

Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye”.
