Reading from the first letter of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians

1 Corinthians 4, 6-15

Brothers and sisters: If I have spoken of Apollos and myself, it was so that you might learn from this example not to be proud of one while despising the other, as I have already written to you. For who makes you superior to others? What do you have that you have not received? And if you have received it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

So you are already satisfied, already rich, already reigning without our help… If only this were true, so that we too might reign with you. For it seems to me that God has treated us, the apostles, as the last of all, as people condemned to the beasts, for we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.

Indeed, we are fools for Christ’s sake, and you are wise in Christ; we are weak, and you are strong; we are despised, and you are honored. To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clothed and beaten; we wander about and toil, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we respond with kindness. We have become, even to this day, the refuse of the world, the scum of all.

I write this not to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you may have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke

Luke 6, 1-5

One Sabbath, Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples were plucking heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the kernels. Then some Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God and took the bread of the Presence, which only the priests may eat, and ate it and gave some to his companions.”

And he added, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
