Gospel of the day August 18, 2026 – Matthew 19, 23-30

First Reading

Reading from the prophecy of Ezekiel

Ezekiel 28, 1-10

In those days, the Lord spoke to me and said: “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre: ‘Thus says the Lord God:

Your heart has become proud, and you have said:
I am a god, I sit on the throne of a god,
in the midst of the seas;
but you are a man and not a god,
yet you think yourself as wise as a god;
you claim to be wiser than Daniel
and to know all secrets;
with your wisdom and skill you have become rich,
you have piled up gold and silver in your treasuries;
with a merchant’s cunning you have increased your wealth
and grown proud because of your fortune’ ”.

Therefore thus says the Lord:
“Because you have thought yourself as wise as a god,
therefore I will bring against you
the most ruthless of foreign nations,
who will draw their swords against your splendor and your wisdom
and put an end to your greatness.
They will kill you
and the sea will be your grave.

Will you still dare to say before your executioners
that you are a god,
when you are nothing but a man?
You will die like a pagan at the hands of foreigners,
for thus says the Lord God’’.

Gospel

Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew

Matthew 19, 23-30

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven”.

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible”.

Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first’’.
