Reading from the First Book of Kings

1 Kings 19, 9a. 11-13a

When he reached the mountain of God, Horeb, the prophet Elijah entered a cave and remained there. The Lord said to him: “Come out of the cave and stand on the mountain to see the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by”.

Elijah did so, and as the Lord approached, first came a hurricane wind that split the mountains and shattered the rocks; but the Lord was not in the wind. Then came an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After that came a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, the murmur of a gentle breeze was heard. Hearing it, Elijah covered his face with his cloak and went out to the entrance of the cave.

Reading from the letter of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans

Romans 9, 1-5

Brothers and sisters: I speak to you in all truth in Christ; I do not lie. My conscience bears witness to me, in the light of the Holy Spirit, that I have infinite sorrow, and ceaseless pain torments my heart.

I would even accept being separated from Christ, if it were for the good of my brothers, those of my race and my blood, the Israelites, to whom belong adoption as children, glory, the covenant, the law, worship, and the promises. They are descendants of the patriarchs; and from their race, according to the flesh, Christ was born, who is above all and is God blessed forever and ever. Amen.

Reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew

Matthew 14, 22-33

At that time, immediately after the multiplication of the loaves, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go to the other shore, while he dismissed the crowd. After dismissing them, he went up the mountain alone to pray. When night came, he was there alone.

Meanwhile, the boat was already far from the shore, and the waves tossed it, because the wind was against them. At dawn, Jesus went toward them, walking on the water. The disciples, seeing him walking on the water, were terrified and said: “It’s a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage and do not be afraid. It is I”.

Then Peter said to him: “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water”. Jesus answered him: “Come”. Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus; but when he felt the force of the wind, fear came over him, he began to sink and cried out: “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, caught him, and said to him: “Man of little faith, why did you doubt?”

As soon as they got into the boat, the wind calmed down. Those in the boat fell down before Jesus, saying: “Truly you are the Son of God”.
