First Reading

Reading from the prophecy of Jeremiah

Jeremiah 26, 1-9

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah and king of Judah, the Lord spoke to Jeremiah and said: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Go to the temple courtyard and tell all the inhabitants of Judah who enter the temple to worship the Lord all the words that I am going to command you, without omitting any. Let’s see if they listen and turn from their evil ways, and I repent of the punishment I have planned to impose on them because of their evil deeds’.

Tell them, then: ‘This is what the Lord says: If they do not obey me, nor keep the law I have given, nor listen to the words of my servants, the prophets, whom I have continually sent to them and whom you have not listened to, then I will treat this temple like the one at Shiloh and make this city a warning to all the peoples of the earth’ ”.

The priests, the prophets, and the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the temple of the Lord. And when he finished saying all that the Lord had commanded him, the priests and the prophets seized him, saying to the people: “This man must die, because he has prophesied in the name of the Lord that this temple will be like the one at Shiloh and that this city will be destroyed and left uninhabited”. Then the people rioted against Jeremiah in the temple of the Lord.

Gospel

Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew

Matthew 13, 54-58

At that time, Jesus came to his hometown and began to teach the people in the synagogue, in such a way that everyone was amazed and asked: “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Is he not the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary and are not his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Do not all his sisters live among us? Where then has he gotten all these things?” And they refused to believe in him.

Then Jesus said to them: “A prophet is not despised except in his own country and in his own house”. And he did not perform many miracles there because of their unbelief.
