Pope Leo XIV will begin his pastoral visit to Lampedusa this Saturday, July 4 with a visit to the island’s cemetery, where he will dedicate a moment of prayer for those who have died in the Mediterranean during migratory routes to Europe. This will be the first official act of the day’s program, before the celebration of Holy Mass and the rest of the scheduled meetings on his agenda.
The first act of the day
According to the program released by the Holy See, the Pope will arrive first at the Lampedusa cemetery, where he will pray in memory of those who lost their lives trying to reach European shores. This gesture will mark the beginning of a visit focused on an island that, for years, has held a prominent place in the Mediterranean migration issue.
Afterward, Leo XIV will preside over Holy Mass and hold various meetings with local authorities, ecclesial representatives, and members of the Lampedusa community.
Lampedusa, a key arrival point for irregular immigration
Due to its geographical position, Lampedusa is one of the main landing points for boats coming from North Africa carrying irregular migrants attempting to enter European territory. At the same time, the waters surrounding the island have been the scene of numerous shipwrecks that have caused thousands of deaths and disappearances in recent decades.
The Pontiff’s first visit to the island
This Saturday’s visit will be Leo XIV’s first to Lampedusa since the beginning of his pontificate. The program will conclude with the celebration of the Eucharist and the planned pastoral meetings, after the Holy Father chose to begin the day with a moment of prayer at the island’s cemetery.
