Madrid keeps the cross used during the vigil of Leo XIV

The Madrid City Council has decided to preserve the cross used during the vigil held on June 6 on the occasion of the apostolic visit of Leo XIV to the Spanish capital. This was announced by the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, during a reception held at the Palacio de Cibeles with representatives of the entities that participated in organizing the events of the papal trip.

According to the city council, the Ayuntamiento is studying the location where the cross will be placed, and it will remain in the city as a memento of the Pontiff’s visit to Madrid.

The reception included representatives from the Apostolic Nunciature, the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the Archdiocese of Madrid, and members of the municipal government team. During the event, the mayor noted that the celebrations and gatherings held during those days reflected the presence and vitality of the Church in the capital.

He also thanked the collaboration of the ecclesiastical institutions involved in organizing the various events held on the occasion of Leo XIV’s visit to Madrid.

More than 8,000 municipal workers took part in the operation

Almeida also highlighted the work of municipal services during the apostolic visit. According to data provided by the City Council, more than 8,000 municipal workers participated in the various operations deployed to ensure the smooth running of the events.

He likewise thanked the citizens for their cooperation during the days when the gatherings and celebrations linked to the visit of Leo XIV took place.

With the decision announced by the City Council, this symbol will remain in the city as a memento of a visit that brought together numerous faithful and included various religious and institutional events during Leo XIV’s stay in Spain.
