Lima Square will host tonight the first large-scale event of Leo XIV in Spain. Before the Pontiff’s dialogue with the young people and the moment of Eucharistic adoration scheduled in the official program, attendees will witness a performance of Godspell, the musical directed by Antonio Banderas that will exceptionally reunite part of its cast for this occasion.
The Pope will arrive at the gathering accompanied by the Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal José Cobo, and by around thirty young people who will join him on stage. After a welcome song and the opening words of the Madrid archbishop, the stage performance will take place.

A story «inspired» by the Gospel of Saint Matthew
Godspell is a musical originally created by John-Michael Tebelak with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The work revolves around a group of young people who, in a contemporary urban setting, encounter a character representing Jesus and begin a journey marked by various teachings and parables drawn from the Gospel of Saint Matthew.
According to the theater group’s description, throughout the performance the members of the group portray different characters and recreate episodes inspired by the Gospel narratives through songs, choreography, and theatrical scenes. The plot does not follow a conventional linear narrative; instead, it unfolds through a succession of parables, dialogues, and musical moments that address issues such as coexistence, forgiveness, solidarity, and human relationships.
The version to be presented tonight in Madrid is directed by Antonio Banderas and is based on the adaptation by Emilio Aragón. On this occasion, part of the cast will exceptionally reunite to take part in the youth vigil presided over by Leo XIV.
A dialogue with the young people
Once the performance concludes, Leo XIV will hold a dialogue with the young people present in Lima Square, one of the central moments of the evening.
The program also includes the Pontiff signing the reverse side of the young people’s cross, a symbolic gesture included in the gathering. After that, the Pope will briefly withdraw while a song is performed before returning to the altar.
Eucharistic adoration will close the vigil
The final part of the event will be dedicated to Eucharistic adoration, which will be presided over by Leo XIV. The celebration will conclude with the blessing imparted by the Holy Father to those in attendance.
