The Archdiocese of Valladolid has received with dismay the news of the death of José Andrés Cabrerizo, judicial vicar, canon of the Cathedral, and one of the priests who, over the past decades, has held the greatest responsibilities within diocesan life. The priest died this Monday at the age of 59 after suffering a heart attack.
His death represents an especially significant loss for the Church in Valladolid, where he was a widely known figure both for his pastoral work and for the various tasks in governance, formation, and ecclesiastical judicial administration that he carried out over more than thirty years of priesthood.
More than thirty years serving the Archdiocese
Ordained a priest in 1992, José Andrés Cabrerizo Machado devoted a large part of his life to the service of the Church in Valladolid.
At the time of his death, he was serving as judicial vicar of the Archdiocese, one of the most important responsibilities in the field of canonical judicial administration. He was also a canon of the Metropolitan Cathedral and, for less than a year, parish priest of Santa Clara and San Pedro.
His career was closely linked to the main institutions of the diocese, where he took on various responsibilities over more than three decades of priestly ministry.
Twelve years as Dean of the Cathedral
Among the positions he held, his role as Dean of the Cathedral of Valladolid stands out, a responsibility he carried out for twelve years.
During that period, he led the cathedral chapter and actively participated in the liturgical, pastoral, and institutional life of Valladolid’s metropolitan see, later maintaining his connection as a canon of the Cathedral.
His work made him a widely recognized figure within the local Church.
Committed to formation and lay apostolate
In addition to his pastoral and judicial responsibilities, Cabrerizo carried out intense activity in other areas of diocesan life.
He was the chaplain of the Catholic Association of Propagandists (ACdP) in Valladolid, where he provided spiritual accompaniment to its members and collaborated in various apostolic initiatives.
He also served as chaplain of the Confraternity of the Risen Jesus and was part of the faculty of the Augustinian Theological Institute, contributing to the formation of future priests and pastoral agents.
The Cathedral will host the funeral Mass
The funeral Mass for the eternal rest of José Andrés Cabrerizo Machado will be celebrated this Wednesday, June 3, at 11:00 a.m. in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Valladolid.
The celebration will be presided over by Mons. Luis Argüello, Archbishop of Valladolid and President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference.
