Pope Leo XIV interrupts the general audience to assist a priest

A spontaneous gesture by Pope Leo XIV during the general audience on Wednesday in St. Peter’s Square became one of the most talked-about moments of the day. The Pontiff interrupted his greeting to the faithful to personally assist a priest who had just fainted among the attendees.

The episode occurred at the end of the audience, when participants were approaching the area near the atrium to greet the Holy Father. Among them was Fr. Diego Semeraro, an Italian priest from the diocese of Taranto, who had traveled to Rome accompanied by his brother, Fr. Franco Semeraro.

After several hours of waiting under the sun, the priest felt unwell and collapsed to the ground, to the surprise of those nearby.

“Your Holiness, is it really you?”

Upon noticing what had happened, Leo XIV abandoned the planned route and immediately went to where the priest was.

According to Fr. Franco Semeraro’s later account to Vatican media, the Pope was the first person to come to his brother’s aid.

Footage released by the Vatican shows the Pontiff bending down beside the priest as medical services arrived. Leo XIV then personally handed him a rosary and remained by his side for a few moments, inquiring about his condition.

The reaction surprised the priest himself, who, still dazed by the incident, asked the Pope: “Your Holiness, is it really you?”.

No serious consequences

After receiving medical assistance, Fr. Diego Semeraro was taken to the Vatican’s medical services for various tests.

The examinations ruled out any serious complications, and the priest was able to continue his day as normal. According to his brother, he even celebrated Mass after lunch.

Fr. Diego will turn 82 next month and has a long pastoral career in the Italian region of Apulia.
