First Reading
Reading from the first letter of the apostle Saint Peter
1 Peter 1, 10-16
Brothers and sisters: The prophets, when they foretold the grace destined for you, also investigated deeply concerning your salvation.
They tried to discover in what time and under what circumstances the indications that the Spirit of Christ, who dwelt in them, had revealed to them about the sufferings of Christ and the glorious triumph that would follow them would be fulfilled. But it was made known to them that they would not see what they prophesied, but that it was reserved for us. All this has now been announced to you through those who have preached the Gospel to you with the power of the Holy Spirit, sent from heaven, and it is certainly something that the angels long to behold.
Therefore, living always attentive and vigilant, place all your hope in the grace that the glorious manifestation of Jesus Christ will bring you.
As obedient children, do not live according to the passions you had before, in the time of your ignorance. On the contrary, just as he who called you is holy, be holy also in all your conduct, for Scripture says: Be holy, because I, the Lord, am holy.
Gospel
Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Mark
Mark 10, 28-31
At that time, Peter said to Jesus: «Lord, you see that we have left everything to follow you.»
Jesus answered him: «Truly I tell you: No one who has left house, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children or lands, for my sake and for the Gospel, will fail to receive, in this life, a hundred times as much in houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children and lands, together with persecutions, and in the other world, eternal life. And many who are now first will be last, and many who are now last will be first.»
