Cardinal Péter Erdő, Metropolitan Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Primate of Hungary, is slowly recovering from a serious health problem, identified as a stroke. The 73-year-old Hungarian cardinal has been in rehabilitation since last February and has been away from public life for several months.
Concern for the cardinal’s health condition increased during the past Holy Week, when he sent only an audio message to the faithful and his voice sounded notably weakened. According to a close source cited by The Catholic Thing, Erdő “is recovering, but very slowly” and is facing this stage “with great faith.”
The cardinal’s prolonged absence has been closely followed in numerous ecclesial circles due to the weight he has carried within the universal Church over the last decades. Considered one of the most influential cardinals in Central Europe, Erdő was also pointed out last year as one of the names with the most possibilities during the conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV.
One of the most respected figures in the European episcopate
Cardinal Erdő is internationally recognized for his intellectual profile, doctrinal firmness, and prudent tone on pastoral issues. Doctor of Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University, he was the general relator of the synods on the family held in 2014 and 2015.
Over the years, he has established himself as a respected voice within the College of Cardinals for his interventions on marriage, evangelization, and the defense of religious freedom in Central Europe.
From Hungary, he has repeatedly defended the Christian roots of the European continent and the importance of preserving the cultural identity marked by faith. His positions on the family, the migration crisis, and resistance to secularism have earned him recognition among numerous Catholics of conservative and traditional sensitivity.
Prayers for his recovery
According to The Catholic Herald, prayers for the cardinal’s health have multiplied in Hungary over the last weeks. In various communities, special devotions to Our Lady Queen of Hungary, as well as to Saint Stephen and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, are being promoted.
Sources close to the archdiocese indicate that the recovery continues to progress, albeit gradually, and that the cardinal continues to receive specialized medical care and rehabilitation support.
The Hungarian Episcopal Conference and the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest have asked the faithful to continue praying for the cardinal’s full recovery.
A doctrinal reference within the College of Cardinals
Created cardinal by Saint John Paul II in 2003, Péter Erdő has participated in several conclaves and for years has been considered a figure of balance between doctrinal fidelity and the ability to address contemporary challenges.
His absence from recent ecclesial events has been observed with concern by those who value his presence as one of the most solid voices in defense of the Church’s permanent teaching amid current doctrinal and pastoral debates.
