Thousands of faithful participated on May 13 in the solemn dedication of the new basilica promoted by the Heralds of the Gospel on Constitución Boulevard in San Salvador, a massive Marian celebration that was attended by President Nayib Bukele and First Lady Gabriela de Bukele.
The ceremony, held on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, turned the new temple into one of the most important Catholic events of the year in El Salvador and once again evidenced the strength of popular Marian devotion in Latin America.
After attending the dedication, Bukele described the new church as “a beautiful house of God” and assured that it represents “a space of hope, encounter, and devotion for thousands of families”.
A New Great Marian Temple in El Salvador
The new basilica has been promoted by the Heralds of the Gospel and is already becoming one of the main centers of Marian devotion and liturgical life in the Salvadoran capital.
The new temple dedicated to the Virgin of Fatima rises in the Apopa area and is part of a broad spiritual complex promoted by the association.
The dedication ceremony was marked by a solemn liturgy, accompanied by sacred music, prayer, and great participation from the faithful.
Bukele Highlights the Spiritual Dimension of the New Temple
The Salvadoran president later shared a message on X in which he emphasized the religious significance of the inauguration.
“I had the honor of attending the dedication ceremony of a new Catholic church in honor of the Virgin of Fatima, a deeply meaningful celebration,” wrote Bukele.
The leader also added that the new basilica “represents a space of hope, encounter, and devotion for thousands of families.”
Bukele’s public presence at religious celebrations has become a habitual feature of his political profile, especially in acts linked to popular faith and the Christian identity of the country.
“Beautiful Churches Convert People”
During a subsequent thanksgiving Mass, Father Fernando Néstor Gioia Otero defended the importance of beauty in liturgical life and evangelization.
“We have to build beautiful churches, because beautiful churches will convert people,” he affirmed.
For his part, Deacon Fernando Costantini explained that beauty is an essential part of the spirit of the Heralds of the Gospel.
“We need beautiful things to elevate our minds toward God,” he stated.
The Sanctuary Will Open on Sundays
According to Costantini, the new basilica will initially open on Sundays for the celebration of three Masses: at 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and at 5:00 in the afternoon.
It will also open on special dates linked to the Virgin of Fatima and other major liturgical celebrations.
The rest of the week it will remain temporarily closed while ongoing work and pending finishes continue in various areas of the complex.
