Official program announced for the beatification of Fulton Sheen: Peoria and St. Louis to host the central events

The Diocese of Peoria has released the official calendar of events for the anticipated beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a national-scope event that will combine liturgical celebrations, prayer, and spiritual formation around one of the most influential figures in Catholicism in the United States.

Peoria Presents the Official Calendar for the Beatification

According to an official statement from the Diocese of Peoria, the event program for the beatification of Fulton Sheen will take place from September 15 to 26, with events distributed between Illinois and the city of St. Louis.

Bishop Louis Tylka has described the moment as “a transcendental occasion not only for our diocese, but for the Church in the United States and worldwide,” emphasizing the spiritual impact expected from this celebration.

A Beatification with a Pilgrimage Dimension

Far from being limited to a single ceremony, the organizers have conceived the set of events as a true spiritual itinerary. Bishop Tylka himself explained that all the events have been designed as part of a pilgrimage that will allow the faithful to “enter more deeply into the spiritual richness of this event” and encounter Christ.

The program includes a nine-day novena starting on September 15, as well as moments of Eucharistic adoration, confessions, liturgical celebrations, and formative encounters centered on Sheen’s figure.

St. Louis Will Host the Beatification to Facilitate Attendance

The beatification Mass will be held in St. Louis on September 24, at The Dome at America’s Center venue, a choice driven by practical considerations, as available spaces in Peoria do not exceed 15,000 people, while the St. Louis venue can accommodate up to 100,000 faithful, allowing for much broader participation. Additionally, its geographical proximity—about two and a half hours by road—facilitates travel from the home diocese.

The day will also include opportunities for Eucharistic adoration and confession before the Mass, as well as veneration of a relic of the future blessed after the celebration.

Liturgical Acts and Celebrations Around Sheen’s Figure

The calendar plans for the main events to begin on September 20 with a commemorative Mass for the anniversary of Sheen’s priestly ordination at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria.

After the beatification in St. Louis, the celebrations will return to Peoria, where Masses of thanksgiving, parish encounters, and a commemorative gala will be held on September 25. The program will conclude on September 26 with a Mass in the Byzantine rite.

A Recognition of a Life of Heroic Virtue

From the diocese, they emphasize that the beatification of Fulton Sheen represents the recognition of “a life lived in heroic virtue,” marked by his evangelizing work through preaching, teaching, and the media.

The statement insists that this celebration seeks not only to honor his legacy but to invite the faithful to deepen their relationship with Christ and renew their commitment to the faith.

Open Invitation to the Faithful

Bishop Tylka has extended the invitation to all the faithful to participate in these events, which will require prior registration due to the large attendance expected.

“It is a moment of grace for the Church,” affirmed the prelate, expressing his hope that the beatification will help many rediscover the love of Jesus Christ and become joyful witnesses to the Gospel in their daily lives.
