The Holy See announced on this December 12 two episcopal appointments for Peru. The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Piura the until now vicar general of the archdiocese, Rev. Luciano Maza Huamán. In another appointment, the Pope has designated Mons. Juan Carlos Asqui Pilco as the new prelate bishop of Chuquibamba, transferring him from his position as auxiliary of Tacna and Moquegua.
Mons. Luciano Maza Huamán, new archbishop of Piura
Born on June 4, 1957 in Castilla, Mons. Luciano Maza Huamán belongs to the clergy of Piura. He studied Philosophy at the San Luis Gonzaga Seminary in Jaén and Theology at the Pontifical and Civil Faculty of Lima. He was ordained a priest on March 25, 1987.
Over nearly four decades of ministry, he has held various pastoral and academic responsibilities: parish vicar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pastor of San Silvestre, formator, spiritual director, and professor at the San Juan María Vianney Seminary. He was also chancellor of the archdiocese, spiritual assistant to several ecclesial movements, and member of the diocesan consultative councils. Since 2023, he has been part of the Vicariate of the Family and, until now, vicar general of Piura.
With this appointment, Maza Huamán assumes leadership of one of the most important sees in the country.
Mons. Juan Carlos Asqui Pilco, new prelate of Chuquibamba
The Pope has transferred Mons. Juan Carlos Asqui Pilco from his position as titular bishop of Arpi and auxiliary of Tacna and Moquegua to assume as prelate bishop of Chuquibamba.
Asqui Pilco was born on December 7, 1972 in Tacna. He studied Philosophy at the Cristo Sacerdote National Seminary (Colombia) and Theology at the Juan XXIII Institute in Lima, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theology. He was ordained a priest on April 23, 2000.
He has held multiple pastoral roles: assistant in various communities, parish vicar and pastor in Ilo and Tacna; advisor to youth movements and charismatic groups; diocesan economy; rector of the San José Seminary in Tacna and episcopal vicar for pastoral care and the implementation of the evangelization plan. In 2022, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Tacna and Moquegua.
Until now, he served as apostolic administrator of Chuquibamba, a prelature that from today he will preside over as prelate bishop.
