(Riccardo Cascioli/La Brújula Cotidiana)– Four months have passed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine: the intention was to be a lightning war and now it promises to last years, as the protagonists themselves recount. Russia has no intention of stopping until it achieves its objective; on the other hand, NATO is determined to do everything possible to defeat Putin. And more and more countries are getting involved in some way. The outlook is increasingly worrying and recalls the prophecy of the Virgin of Civitavecchia about the risk of a worldwide nuclear war between West and East, which can be avoided under these conditions…
Exactly four months have passed since that February 24 when, at 5 a.m., the first Russian bombardment began the invasion of Ukraine. The intention was to be a lightning war to secure control of the Donbass, take control of the corridor to link it with Crimea, annexed unilaterally in 2014, and provoke a regime change in Kiev to bring Ukraine back into Moscow’s orbit. As almost always happens, things turned out differently than expected: the political objective was not achieved, even the military operation is running late; although Russian troops, after having created the desired corridor, are now taking control of the Donbass. The Ukrainian resistance, with the generous supply of weapons from Western countries, has complicated the Russian advance, but it does not stop.
Thus time passes, the war becomes chronic -the protagonists on both fronts speak openly of a war that will last years- and it drags on while paradoxically the attention of public opinion wanes. Indeed, with an attitude of distracted spectators we have witnessed in recent months -in addition to the destruction of the attacked Ukrainian regions and the thousands of deaths on both sides- the request for NATO membership by Sweden and Finland, the challenge launched to Russia by Lithuania with the blockade of the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, the beginning of the rearmament of the countries of the former Warsaw Pact, with Poland at the forefront.
Meanwhile, after an initial wait, China and India are increasingly openly supporting Russia, and it was glimpsed at the annual BRICS meeting, the bloc of the five fastest-growing countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, has directly attacked the West, especially on the issue of economic sanctions that, used as a “political weapon,” have negative consequences for everyone. After all, as Russian President Vladimir Putin said, the axis with the BRICS is nullifying the negative effects of Western sanctions: in the first three months of 2022, trade between Russia and the other four partners increased by 38%, reaching the figure of 45 billion dollars. Moreover, the situation created with Western countries is accelerating the attempt to create an alternative international financial system among the BRICS countries.
On the other hand, the serious consequences for Europe of the sanctions against Russia, especially regarding gas supplies, do not undermine for the moment the determination to support the Ukrainian resistance and stop Putin at all costs. On the eve of the G7 (Sunday, June 26) and the NATO summit (June 29), a hardening of sanctions and an increase in military supplies to the Kiev government is taken for granted.
The interview disseminated yesterday by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, to the main European newspapers (published in Italy by the Corriere della Sera) offers a clear picture of Western objectives and strategy. No “bad peace deal” with Putin. The goal is to make Putin’s project fail, that is, “we must at least return to the status quo before February 24 (…) It means that his forces are expelled from the areas of Ukraine that they have invaded so far.” If this is the objective, “we must help the Ukrainians to have strategic resistance capacity: they must continue to advance”; which also means that “this is not the time to maintain the status quo, this is the time to try to change things. As long as the Ukrainians are capable of mounting a counteroffensive, they must be supported, with the equipment they ask us for.” And it will be Ukrainian President Zelensky who will once again propose this request, participating in both the G7 and the NATO summit.
Johnson’s perspective is clearly long-term and he himself takes into account “the costs of energy, the pressure of inflation, food prices”; factors that are already shaking European countries. But above all, it implies an increasingly direct military involvement. If, despite the fact that in recent months more than 40 billion dollars in financial and military aid have been sent to Ukraine (more than half from the United States) -and military aid from NATO countries was already present much earlier-, it was not possible to bridge the military gap with Russia, what will have to be done to stop the Russian troops and then organize a counteroffensive to recover the territories lost in these four months? It is obvious that Johnson is talking about a military escalation that cannot be limited to mere arms supplies and technical assistance.
Therefore, the looming scenario is that of a war that tends to intensify and internationalize, a prospect aggravated by the fact that there is no actor on the ground who has in mind a true peace initiative. The diplomatic action of the Holy See also cannot change the course of things, not only because of the erratic course it has taken in recent months, but because at the moment there are no actors who are really interested in a mediation that only has moral force.
In the face of such a dangerous situation and with a stunned public opinion, the messages that the Virgin of Civitavecchia entrusted to the Gregori family as early as 1995 cannot help but be remembered. In the interview with Riccardo Caniato contained in the book “Civitavecchia, 25 years with Mary,” by Father Flavio Ubodi (Ares 2020), Fabio Gregori explains how Our Lady -who is directly related to the apparitions of Fatima- “warned us that Satan is powerful and wants to unleash hatred, hence the war to destroy humanity.” And what war are we talking about? “The threat of a nuclear conflict between West and East, the third world war.” Moreover, it is a war that goes hand in hand with the war against the “Christian family founded on marriage” and with “a new great apostasy, that is, the denial [by the shepherds] of the fundamental Christian truths reaffirmed over the centuries in tradition and doctrine.” As we see, the great apostasy and war against marriage are already in an advanced stage; conversion -with prayer and penance- is the true key to preventing the rest from happening.
