The Vatican is considering a visit by Leo XIV to Uruguay at the end of 2026

Cardinal Daniel Sturla has indicated that there is a high probability that Pope Leo XIV will visit Uruguay at the end of November or beginning of December this year, as part of a potential tour of Latin America that would also include Argentina and Peru.

A visit conditioned by the political context in the region

According to the Uruguayan media El Observador, the Archbishop of Montevideo explained in a press conference, after participating in Good Friday activities, that the trip «depends on many realities; among others, that there are elections in Peru this year and, therefore, we will have to wait for the new government to be established».

The cardinal emphasized that, despite these circumstances, the expectation remains that the Pontiff can carry out the visit before the year ends.

Expectations reiterated from the Uruguayan episcopate

The Uruguayan president, Yamandú Orsi, personally extended an invitation to the Pope during his visit to the Vatican in October 2025. Likewise, on Christmas of that same year, Sturla publicly expressed his desire for Leo XIV to include Uruguay in his agenda. On that occasion, he noted that the Pontiff himself had expressed on various occasions his intention to travel to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.

After his election as successor to Francis, Sturla himself recounted that, in his first meeting with the new Pope, he reminded him of the pending invitation: «Holy Father, we await you in Uruguay».

If confirmed, the trip would constitute the first visit of Leo XIV to the country and would represent a significant gesture toward a region that the Pope knows firsthand.
