Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki has issued a clear warning about a trend spreading in some dioceses: the replacement of the Holy Mass with Word celebrations, even including the distribution of Communion. According to Katholisch.de, the Archbishop of Cologne denounced this practice during the Chrism Mass celebrated in the cathedral.

“This is no longer Catholic”

Woelki expressed his concern about what he described as a worrying pastoral drift. “With increasing frequency, Word celebrations—often with the distribution of Communion—are replacing the celebration of the Eucharist,” he stated.

The cardinal was blunt in addressing the priests: “This, dear brothers, is no longer Catholic, and I earnestly ask you to oppose it from the outset.”

For Woelki, this is not a secondary issue, but something that touches directly on the very essence of the Church, which he defined as an “eucharistic assembly” that arises precisely from the celebration of the sacrifice of the Mass.

The Eucharist cannot be replaced

The archbishop insisted that the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist “is not replaceable or interchangeable.” He recalled that from the earliest times of Christianity, the community gathered around the Sunday Mass, a practice that cannot be diluted without consequences.

In this regard, he advocated for a conscious recovery of the central place of the Eucharist, pointing out that only from it can an authentic spiritual renewal of communities take place.

The daily Mass, essential for the priest

Woelki also addressed a direct message to the clergy, urging priests to celebrate the Eucharist daily. He emphasized that this practice does not depend on the number of faithful present.

“Even if few faithful participate, or none, the daily celebration of the Mass is spiritually necessary and practically vital for us,” he affirmed.

The cardinal recalled that the Church insistently recommends this practice, not as an optional devotion, but as something “constitutive of our priestly being and acting.”

Risk of weakening sacramental life

The archbishop also warned of the risk that, by reducing the frequency of the Mass, the faithful themselves end up losing the habit of participating in the Eucharist.

In this context, his words take on special relevance, as the Archdiocese of Cologne authorized in 2024 the celebration of Word liturgies with the distribution of Communion on Sundays, although only in cases where attending Mass is not possible.

With his intervention, Woelki focuses on an essential issue: the centrality of the Eucharist in the life of the Church and the Christian. It is not just about preserving a liturgical form, but about safeguarding the “mystery of faith,” the source of grace and the core of sacramental life.
